> Case 21: Qianfeng's Three Illnesses

> Question: Ganfeng addressed the assembly: "The Dharmakaya has three kinds of sickness and two kinds of light—each must be penetrated thoroughly. Moreover, there is simultaneous illumination and function, and a single aperture beyond. One must realize it at the feet." Yunmen came forward and said, "Why don't those inside the hut know what's happening outside?" Ganfeng laughed heartily. Yunmen said, "This is still where I have doubt." Ganfeng said, "What state of mind is this?" Yunmen said, "I also rely on the master to entrust the matter." Ganfeng said, "Only by being so can one sit securely." Yunmen said, "Yes, yes." Tiantong commented: "If you remain seated, the sickness is incurable. If you apply the light, it does not penetrate. Even if you traverse the whole of existence in all directions and turn the one mechanism completely, you still won't know there is an aperture beyond. Can you then sit securely? After all, the frosty nighttime moon drifts along and falls into the stream before the hermitage."

> The Master said, "Qianfeng, Caoshan, and Shushan were all disciples of Dongshan. Yunmen also had some kōan exchanges with each, but among them only Qianfeng’s sayings became well-known. "One day, Qianfeng addressed the assembly, saying: ‘Mention one thing, do not mention two. If you let the first slip, you fall into the second.’ "Yunmen stepped forward and said, ‘Yesterday someone came from Mount Tiantai and then went to Mount Jing.’ "Qianfeng replied, ‘Tomorrow there will be no universal labor.’ He then descended from his seat. "Once, Mazu was giving a discourse and intended to display his great function and great potential. Unexpectedly, Baizhang rolled up the sitting mat. Mazu then swallowed his words and held his breath. "Qianfeng, when expounding the Dharma, laid out an elaborate battle array—the three types of illness with the Dharma-body, the two kinds of light, illumination and function occurring simultaneously, and the single aperture beyond. But Yunmen, dressed in a feather fan and scholar’s cap, skillfully neutralized this strategy over the banquet table. Later, when Yunmen addressed the assembly, he borrowed Qianfeng’s own battle array. Having no opponent to match him, he galloped freely like a lone horseman. "Yunmen said to the assembly: ‘There are two kinds of illness regarding light not penetrating. First, you are unclear in all places, and something seems to be before you. Second, even if you penetrate the emptiness of all dharmas, there still seems to be something vaguely present—this, too, is the illness of light not penetrating. Furthermore, there are also two illnesses with the Dharma-body. One is that upon attaining the Dharma-body, your attachment to the Dharma remains, your own view persists, and you fall into just the Dharma-body. The second is that even if you break through, letting go is not permissible. If you examine it carefully, what flavor does it have? This, too, is an illness.’ "After Qianfeng finished speaking, Yunmen came forward from the assembly and naturally asked, ‘What are the three illnesses, the two kinds of light, illumination and function occurring simultaneously, and the single aperture beyond?’ This is exactly how a beginner requests instruction. Yet Yunmen, having gained official rank, did not waste time on idle classical phrases. He instead spoke of trimming mulberry and jujube trees, and of wide-horned water buffalos—none of this ‘thee and thou’ nonsense. Qianfeng realized his style was useless here, so he smiled and put on a show of hawking pears, trying to cover things over. Yunmen pretended to be simple, saying, ‘Still the student’s doubt lies here.’ Qianfeng rebuked himself, saying, ‘What kind of mind and conduct is this?’ Both having exposed themselves, Yunmen said, ‘I also want to ask the Master to fully understand this.’ Then Qianfeng said, ‘Much emptiness is not as good as a little reality,’ and then, ‘Only this way can we sit steady.’ "Qianfeng was a sharp-witted man from Ru—his words were like an awl. Yunmen was a blunt fellow from You-Ji—his words were like a hammer. Using an awl to pierce a hammer, and a hammer to break an awl—some mutual destruction must happen. Xuedou said, ‘If you clearly understand the phrases of praise and blame, it may not be that a good cause brings an evil result.’ Wansong commented: ‘It simply tests your eloquence.’ "Tiantong commented: ‘If you sit still, the illness has entered the vital organs. If you act, the light does not penetrate. Open your mouth and you cannot close it. Close your mouth and you cannot open it. What use is this? Even if you freely trace the whole word or roundly revolve one pivot, it’s still only what I use every day. You still don’t know that there exists a single aperture beyond. Without one incident, you don’t gain one wisdom. If it weren’t for Tiantong, I would almost have forgotten. Can you indeed “sit steadily” now? The kang hasn’t gotten warm yet, but official duties press on. "Fayan said: ‘When principle is ultimate, feelings are forgotten. How can there be any simile to match? Finally, the frosty midnight moon obediently falls into the stream ahead.’ Tiantong was able to skillfully use these words, but unfortunately in trying to create something clever, he only produced a blunder."
