### 第二十四則臨濟賓主

> Case 24: Linji's Host and Guest

舉臨濟兩堂首座齊下喝。蝦蟆呌僧問濟還有賓主也無。問取蝦蟆濟云。賓主歷然。咄天童拈云。殺人刀活人劍。在臨濟手裏。天童萬松。豈可無分雖然如是。當時便與一喝。咄云。即今亦不遲直饒大騁神通。也祇得同聲相應豈止在臨濟手裏。

> Both hall leaders of Linji shouted simultaneously. <note>The croaking of a frog.</note> A monk asked Linji, "Is there a distinction between host and guest?" <note>Go ask the frog.</note> Linji said, "Host and guest are clearly distinct." <note>Hah!</note> Tiantong commented: "The sword that kills and the sword that gives life — both lie in Linji’s hand." <note>Isn’t Tiantong or Wansong involved too?</note> "Even so, at that moment I'd have added a shout." <note>Hah! Doing it now wouldn't be too late.</note> "No matter how great the miraculous powers displayed, all you'd get is an echo in response." <note>Is it only in Linji’s hand?</note>

師云。風穴參雪峰。嘗問此話。峰敘與巖頭欽山進途。而值臨濟已逝。不及參見。則曰汝欲會。當問取他子孫可耳。穴後見南院顒。舉雪峰之意。院曰。雪峰古佛也。承天宗道。臨濟此語。走殺天下衲僧。我即不然。當時見僧舉。但云一對無孔銕鎚。萬松咄云。百雜碎。臨濟一日問洛浦。一人行棒。一人行喝。那箇親。浦云。總不親。濟云。作麼生得親。浦便喝。濟便打。葢臨濟宗風。當陽獨露。全機大用。不貴言說。當時若問萬松。兩堂首座齊喝。還有賓主也無。咄云。賓主歷然。臨濟有語無喝。天童有喝無語。如今殺人刀。活人劍。在萬松手裏。忽有人問。那箇是賓。那箇是主。咄云。具眼底辨取。

> The master said: Fengxue once visited Xuefeng and asked him about this saying. Xuefeng recounted how he, Yantou, and Qinshan were traveling together, but arrived after Linji had already passed away, so they missed the chance to meet him. Xuefeng then said, "If you want to understand, you should ask his descendants." Later, Fengxue went to Nanyuan and relayed Xuefeng's words. Nanyuan said, "Xuefeng is an ancient Buddha." Cheng Tian Zong Dao remarked: "Linji’s words have sent every monk in the world running themselves ragged. But I’m different. If a monk brings this up to me, I’d just say, 'A pair of solid iron hammers.'" Wansong scoffed, "Utterly shattered!" One day, Linji asked Luopu, "One person uses the stick, another uses the shout—which one is closer?" Luopu said, "Neither is closer." Linji said, "Then what brings closeness?" Luopu shouted. Linji struck him. The essential style of the Linji school is to reveal directly on the spot, to manifest the full function, and not to value verbal explanations. If someone had asked Wansong at that time, "When the heads of both halls in the monastery shout at once, is there still a host and a guest?" I would snap back, "The host and guest are clearly distinct." Linji had words but no shout. Tiantong had a shout but no words. Now the killing sword and the life-giving sword are in Wansong’s hands. If suddenly someone asks, "Which is the guest? Which is the host?" I would snap back, "See for yourself if you have eyes."
