> Case 47: The Banana Plant Walking Stick

> He held up a banana plant and said to the assembly, “If you have a staff, I will give you a staff.” <note>Adding soil to a bone heap.</note> “If you have no staff, I will take your staff away.” <note>Digging a pit where the earth emerges.</note> Tiantong remarked: If you have it, then everything exists. <note>Everyone is fully endowed.</note> If you lack it, then nothing exists. <note>Completely empty, body and all.</note> Having or lacking—this is up to you. <note>Perfect like the great void, neither lacking nor in excess.</note> What does giving or taking have to do with the banana plant? <note>It is only because of grasping and rejecting that we fall short.</note> Right at this very moment—what is your staff? <note>Striking with the shout.</note>

> The Master said: The Chan Master Huiqing of Yazhou's Bajiao Mountain was the dharma heir of Nanta Guangyong. Guangyong was the heir of Yangshan. Thus, Bajiao was the great-grandson in the dharma lineage of Guishan. He once ascended the hall and said: "When I was twenty-eight, I went to Yangshan. I saw Nanta ascend the hall and say: 'All of you, if you are true individuals, from the very moment you emerge from your mother's womb, you should be able to roar like a lion. Wouldn't that be wonderful?' At that moment, my body and mind found rest right there. I then followed him for five years." Bajiao instructed the assembly, saying: "If you have a staff, I will give you a staff." Wansong commented: "If the Patriarch had not come from the West, and Shaolin had not transmitted the wondrous teaching, why would there be a need for Bodhidharma's direct pointing to the mind?" He also said: "If you have no staff, I will take your staff away. Even if you come with nothing at all, you must still put it down to succeed." Dagui Zhe said: "Dagui is not like that. If you have a staff, I will take your staff away. If you have no staff, I will give you a staff. Since Dagui is like this, can all of you make use of it? If you can make use of it, then Deshan leads the vanguard and Linji brings up the rear. If you cannot make use of it, then return it to its original owner." Wansong commented: "Pushing the boat along with the current—people of the time know this exists. Tiantong brings it forth: A true great man—having or not having lies within himself; he does not accept Bajiao's arrangements. This, from of old, has been called the monk's staff." Tiantong, fearing people might miss the point, further said: "Right at such a moment, what is your staff? Even if you can pick it out, don't let Wansong see it. He'll break it into eight pieces, burn it, and scatter the ashes." Wansong is old; it would be fine to leave it be. Why? Sometimes it helps one cross the water of a broken bridge; many times it accompanies one back to the moonlit village.
