The "Nian Ba Fang Zhu Yu Ji" (Collection of Gems from Eight Directions) was compiled and reorganized by the Song Dynasty Chan monk Zuoqing during the peak period of Southern Song Chan Buddhism. This work gathers the sharp dialogues and case records (gong'an) of Chan masters from the Tang and Song dynasties, primarily focusing on the "nian gu" (raising ancient cases) and "song gu" (verses on ancient cases) of patriarchs from the Linji and Yunmen schools. Its purpose is to elucidate the essence of Chan practice and the opportunities for awakening. As an important collection of Chan sayings, it not only preserves many lost historical Chan texts but also vividly reflects the evolution and characteristics of Song Dynasty Chan style. It is a key text for studying the history of Chan thought and the genre of recorded sayings, holding an irreplaceable position in Buddhist literature and the transmission of Chan teachings.
