> Case 4: Chongshou Points to a Stool

> The master said, "A flavorless talk seals people's mouths shut." Tell me, if the ancients possessed such profound truth, why didn’t they speak of it directly? Instead, they pointed to a stool. What’s so remarkable about that? Yunmen said, "Heaven and earth are far apart." Huai said, "It’s made of nanmu and elm." Xiutong said, "Four legs on the ground." Together with Chongshou, all were buried in a single pit. Here at my hermitage, I don’t need a stool. I just need the ground to be clean and pure. That’s why Xuedou said, "The vast lake hides the mountain; truth can subdue the leopard." Xuedou spoke like this—was he clarifying their words, pointing out their faults, praising, or criticizing? Every single mention and every single gesture—if you have the skill, it naturally covers heaven and earth.
