> The master said, "Xuedou brought this up with good intentions, but also not with good intentions. Why? One hand lifts, the other presses down." A monk asked Xuefeng, "What about the ancient stream with cold spring water?" Xuefeng replied, "Staring eyes cannot see the bottom." The monk asked, "What about one who drinks from it?" Xuefeng said, "It does not enter through the mouth." Later people only interpreted this as a non-answer. But why settle for such a shallow understanding? You'd have a better chance of seeing a donkey in a dream. Fenyang called this "using an example to clarify oneself." What about the ancient stream with cold spring water? Staring eyes cannot see the bottom—this illuminates what lies directly beneath his feet. Xuefeng was a great teacher of fifteen hundred disciples. Yet he answered according to the question asked, saying, "Staring eyes cannot see the bottom." Because the monk asked about what's beneath his own feet, which is like the ancient stream and cold spring. This old master was truly intimate and direct. The ancients said, "The answer lies in the question; the question lies in the answer." Haven't you seen the monk who asked Yunmen, "Is the Dharma like the moon reflected in water?" Yunmen said, "Clear waves have no path through." Tell me—are these the same or different? People today just follow the words and create interpretations. They don't realize that when Zhaozhou and Xuefeng met, Zhaozhou said, "One cannot enter through the nostrils." Xuefeng said, "Zhaozhou is an ancient Buddha." From then on, Xuefeng stopped answering questions. This was already a meeting between them. Tell me—what is the meaning here? You must break through the lacquered bucket before your eyes before you can enter. Later people didn't understand the wind's direction and made a living under Zhaozhou's words. If you're a person who understands, you'll surely know where these two venerable masters landed. Xuefeng said, "Zhaozhou is an ancient Buddha. From then on, he stopped answering questions." This single phrase is like gold and jade—its value is hard to measure. Although Xuefeng answered the monk's question, he never made his words into a stake for tying donkeys. How many people have misunderstood, vainly poking holes through the middle? They don't understand the fundamental teaching. If this matter were only in words and phrases, then we wouldn't be deeply doing injustice to the ancients. It's said, "The jade maiden has already returned to the celestial heights, while the fool still lingers by the fire." Xuedou said, "Everyone in the assembly says Xuefeng answered his question, thus raising the low and flattening the high—hard to distinguish a true master." This is another misunderstanding! They've swallowed Xuedou's poison. This meaning is like being split in two from Fayan's words—just because he lifts with one hand and presses with the other. Take for example Zhaozhou's examination of the old woman. Tell me—did he see through her or not? And tell me—did Xuefeng answer his question or not? Zhen Ru Zhe, raising Zhaozhou's examination of the old woman, said, "All the monks under heaven only know to ask the old woman for directions, but don't know the mud is deep beneath their own feet. If not for old Zhaozhou, how could anyone display such merit?" And Xuedou said, "Interpreting it this way deeply wrongs the ancients." Tell me—is it wronging them or not? Master Huai said, "How do you understand the principle of not answering? Praising Zhaozhou is one thing, but do you know where the flaw in Zhaozhou's jade is? If you can point it out, then Lin Xiangru did not deceive the King of Qin." Xuedou clearly brought this up. But people today don't go to see Zhaozhou and Xuefeng—instead they go bite Xuedou's words and run along his verbal thread. They don't understand that Xuedou lifts with one hand and presses with the other. Tell me—who is the true master who cuts through nails and chops iron? Who is the one who raises the low and flattens the high, hard to recognize as a true author? Even if you can discern this, you're still just walking along the verbal thread.
