The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Pò'ān Zǔxiān was compiled by his disciples, including Yuánzhào, during the Southern Song dynasty. Chan Master Zǔxiān was a dharma heir of Mì'ān Xiánjié and belonged to the Yángqí branch of the Línjì school, active in the Jiangnan region from the late twelfth to early thirteenth century. The record contains his teachings, dharma discourses, sharp dialogues, and letters, embodying the Línjì approach of directly pointing to the mind, seeing one's nature, and attaining buddhahood. It emphasizes actual practice and sudden awakening. This text serves as an important document for studying the thought and practice of the Southern Song Línjì school, demonstrating the mature form of gōng'àn instruction in Chan. It has profoundly influenced later Chan development and is revered as a classic within the Chan tradition.
