> Shi Yu, keeper of the canon

> The Buddha's supreme, wondrous path is not originally something forced into existence as an artificial construct. It is not some heretical fabrication, nor is it an impossibly lofty and difficult practice. It is simply what you already have, what you already use, right in your everyday activities. Force a name on it and it is called the Innate Buddha of Your Own Nature. It is also called your own True Master. To put it in near terms: at all times and in all places, you see forms and hear sounds with Shakyamuni Buddha's eyes and ears. You speak and breathe with Bodhidharma's tongue and nostrils. To speak in ultimate terms: all the Buddhas and Patriarchs of the ten directions are utterly stripped bare—their very lives are in the palm of your hand. Whether you gather them up or let them go, it is entirely up to you. If you truly have this capacity for maneuver, I guarantee that all Buddhas and Patriarchs will have a share in surrendering before you. There will be no way for them to beg for their lives from your hands. But if you have not yet attained the eye that leaps beyond conventions, and you lack the skill to bind tigers and seize dragons, then inevitably, in every place and at every time, when you see forms you are obstructed by forms, when you hear sounds you are obstructed by sounds. Even your speech and breath are nothing but sleep-talk in broad daylight with your eyes wide open. Therefore the Perfect Enlightenment Sutra says: "Because of beginningless fundamental ignorance, from the moment of birth it takes charge of everything. Beings are born without the eye of wisdom. The very nature of their bodies and minds is all ignorance." How true these words are! Having lost your own command, you then take orders from ignorance. Thus you cannot turn things around—instead, things turn you around. This skull born of a mother is pierced through by it. This root of life and death is governed by it. Yet you are content to stick your hands and trip your feet in the dense dark forest with no freedom at all. In the towering sea of suffering, you bob up and down with no end to your liberation. The teachings call this truly pitiable. The ancient Buddhas and World-Honored Ones, unable to bear sitting by and watching, dragged themselves through mud and water, setting up countless skillful means to untie your bonds and release you. Further down, the Patriarchs, not sparing even their eyebrows, showed you one moment, one situation, one prod, one thrust—like a spark struck from stone, like a flash of lightning, like a swift flame passing through wind, like a rushing stream crossing a blade, like a diamond noose, like an iron-tasting dumpling. A hundred kinds and a thousand manners, each one offering you a way out of the birth-and-death cycle. If you are a man of bronze head and iron brow, poke him and he turns. Like a lion cub on a ten-thousand-fathom cliff, one prod and he flips over. One roar and the brains of a hundred beasts split open. Only then do you have a fraction of a monk's mettle. Have you not seen how Master Linji three times asked Huangbo about the essential meaning of the Buddhadharma and three times received a painful blow? Later, when Dayu pointed it out to him, he suddenly smashed open the lacquer bucket and said, "So Huangbo's Buddhadharma is nothing much after all." This is the very model of flipping over at a single prod. From then on he traveled freely across the seas, becoming a tree of cool shade, covering the children and grandchildren of the world. Later, Elder Baiyun Duan said: "One punch knocks down the Yellow Crane Tower. One kick turns over Parrot Island. When the spirit is there, add more spirit. Where it is not elegant, still be elegant." This is the model of one whose whole body is fully alive, who is not unworthy to be called a descendant of Linji. My own teacher, Sun Yu the Canon Keeper, roused his will and practiced Zen meditation. If you can truly rouse yourself and press forward with courage, do not speak of Baiyun and Linji—you should know that Bodhidharma and Shakyamuni Buddha are right at the tips of your toes. Above all, do not carelessly let them slip past.
