住杭州靈隱禪寺法嗣　淨伏　編

師入寺。指山門云。此是黃面瞿曇。始初開法。廣度群有。大方便門。新長老。與誰同行同到。驟步云。把手拽不入。

> The Master entered the temple. Pointing at the mountain gate, he said: "This is the yellow-faced Gautama's original gateway of teaching, where he first opened the Dharma, widely liberating all beings—the great expedient gate. New Elder, with whom did you travel and arrive here?" Then, striding swiftly, he said: "Even pulling by the hand, you cannot enter."

佛殿。佛身無為。不墮諸數。者一殿功德。為什麼盡是色裝泥塑。良久云。無今不成古。

踞室。烹佛煉祖。鍛聖鎔凡。殺活在手。寶劒光寒。意在星兮不在盤。

> Abiding in his chamber, he refines Buddhas and forges Patriarchs, tempers sages and melts away the ordinary. Life and death are in his grasp; the precious sword gleams cold. His mind is on the stars, not on the plate.

陞座。祝聖罷。乃云。古鏡無光。當臺自照。森羅絕影。覿面難逃。行不言之令。坐致太平。贊無為之化。六國晏清。天高地厚。水綠山青。山青青水泠泠。湘西古渡夕陽明。岳足當簷開畵屏。

> Ascending the seat. After offering blessings to the sage, he then said: The ancient mirror has no light, yet before the platform it reflects itself. The myriad forms cast no shadow, yet face to face, none can escape. He issues wordless commands, sitting peacefully to bring about great peace. He praises the transformation of non-action, and the six kingdoms rest in tranquility. Heaven is high, earth is thick; waters are green, mountains are blue. The mountains blue, the waters cold. At the ancient ferry west of Xiang, the setting sun shines bright. At the foot of the mountain, before the eaves, a painted screen opens wide.

復舉。寶壽開堂。三聖推出一僧。寶壽便打。三聖云。恁麼為人。非但瞎却這僧眼。瞎却鎮州一城人眼在。壽歸方丈。

> Again, there is the story of Baoshou holding a Dharma talk. Sansheng pushed a monk forward. Baoshou immediately struck him. Sansheng said, "If this is how you guide others, you have not only blinded this monk's eyes—you have blinded the eyes of everyone in Zhenzhou." Baoshou then returned to his quarters.

師拈云。這棒合是寶壽三聖自喫。何也。盡道是臨濟二子。義出豐年。殊不知。正是儉生不孝。

> The master raised his staff and said, "This stick should be eaten by Baoshou and Sansheng themselves. Why? Everyone says they are the two sons of Linji, born in a year of plenty. But they fail to realize—this is precisely how hardship gives rise to unfilial sons."

上堂。李白桃紅。桃紅李白。或雨或晴。或寒或熱。一一是諸人放身捨命處。因甚不肯承當。忽有箇漢。出來道。長老豈無方便為人。只向他道。口是禍門。

> The Master ascended the platform and said: "Plum blossoms are white, peach blossoms are red. Peach blossoms are red, plum blossoms are white. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it's sunny. Sometimes it's cold, sometimes it's hot. Each and every one of these is the place where you can let go of your body and surrender your life. Why won't you accept and embrace it?" Suddenly, a fellow stepped forward and said, "Venerable, surely you have skillful means to guide people?" The Master simply replied to him, "The mouth is the gate of calamity."

上堂。大盡三十日。小盡二十九。忽然春盡夏來。不覺夜穿露肘。貧無絲繫蟻。內外空諸有。拄杖聞得。踊躍歡喜。作是言曰。曹山曾語稅闍梨。清原白家三盞酒。卓拄杖一下。

> The master ascended the hall and said: "The long month has thirty days, the short month twenty-nine. Suddenly spring ends and summer arrives, and before you know it, your robe is worn through at the elbows. So poor there isn't even a thread to tie an ant, inside and out, all is empty. Hearing this, my staff leaped for joy and said: 'Caoshan once told Tax Collector Sheli: three cups of wine from the Qingyuan Bai family.'" Then he struck the floor once with his staff.

上堂。擊鼓陞堂。說無義語。有一句到汝諸人。家國興盛。無一句到汝諸人。四海晏清。拈露柱向燈籠上。將露柱掛燈籠邊。飢來喫飯。困即打眠。有甚麼事。若也不會。五月黃梅爛石臼。

上堂。七佛已前。然燈已後。無人道著。因甚鷲嶺拈花。飲光微笑。國清才子貴。家富小兒嬌。

佛涅槃上堂。十五日已前。今日有。十五日已後。明日無。正當十五日。是有耶。是無耶。石頭大底大。小底小。野猿啼破千山曉。

上堂。舉教中道。遠離顛倒夢想。究竟涅槃。拋却甜桃樹。㳂山摘醋梨。者些消息子。能有幾人知。若也知。滿山花發杜䳌啼。
