The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Touzi Yiqing was expounded by the eminent Caodong School master Touzi Yiqing of the Song Dynasty and later compiled by his dharma heir Zijue. Completed during the mid to late Northern Song period—a time of flourishing Chan Buddhism and vibrant contention among various schools—the text systematically presents Master Yiqing’s teachings, including formal discourses, informal instructions, encounter dialogues, and verses. It elucidates the principles of the Caodong School’s Silent Illumination Chan, integrating concepts such as the Five Ranks of Lord and Minister and the interpenetration of the Absolute and the Relative, thereby illuminating the perfect harmony of principle and phenomena. As a vital document of the Caodong tradition, this record not only inherits the Chan style transmitted from Shitou Xiqian but also establishes the Touzi lineage, exerting profound influence on the development of Chan Buddhism in both China and Japan. It stands as a core text for the study of Song-dynasty Chan thought and the doctrinal transmission of the Caodong School.
