The Collected Essentials of the Sayings of Dahui Zonggao of Boshan was compiled by Chengzheng, the chief disciple of the eminent Ming Dynasty Chan Master Wuyi Yuanlai. This work gathers the recorded sayings, teachings, dialogues, and essential principles of Chan practice of Master Wuyi Yuanlai, embodying his integrative approach that blends Chan and Pure Land Buddhism, emphasizing the practice of "observing the huatou" and reciting the Buddha's name in Pure Land devotion. As a key text of the Boshan lineage within the Caodong school, it serves not only as a core scripture for studying the revival of Chan Buddhism in the late Ming Dynasty and the trend of dual cultivation in Chan and Pure Land, but also has exerted a profound influence on the practice of Chinese Buddhism in later generations.
