> The Buddhist Canon is to Buddhism what the Four Treasuries are to Confucianism. The Four Treasuries trace their origins to the \*Bibliographical Treatise\* of the \*Book of Han\*, with additions made through successive dynasties—though they compiled catalogs, they did not gather the texts themselves. Even the \*Yongle Encyclopedia\* and the \*Complete Library of the Four Treasuries\*, while collecting works, were not printed. As a result, texts were gathered and scattered over time. Today, not only are the records from the Han and Tang dynasties and the \*Yongle Encyclopedia\* impossible to see in their entirety, but even the \*Complete Library of the Four Treasuries\*—of which seven handwritten copies were originally made—has, after wars and turmoil, only one surviving copy, now preserved in Taiwan. It can be said that its survival hangs by a thread. The Buddhist Canon, however, is different. After the Six Dynasties, various catalogs of scriptures were compiled, much like the Confucian catalogs that listed titles without the texts. But starting from the Kaiyuan era of the Tang dynasty, when the \*Kaiyuan Catalog\* was compiled and officially included in the canon, and in the fourth year of the Kaibao era of the Song dynasty, when it was carved onto printing blocks, the canon has been continuously compiled and printed. It spread to Korea and Japan, where it was also imitated. Although the contents varied slightly, every text included—down to the smallest phrase or character—has been preserved without loss. As long as the printing blocks remain intact, collectors and scholars alike can access it at will. This truly reflects a well-designed and thoughtful system.

> Throughout the dynasties of our country, the compilation and printing of the Buddhist canon were sometimes overseen by the government and sometimes initiated by devotees, continuing until the Qing Dynasty's \*Dragon Canon\*. The Korean Buddhist canon was entirely managed by the government. Japan followed a similar approach to ours, and in recent years, the various canons they have carved include an exceptionally large number of scriptures. In the late Qing Dynasty, the Shanghai Pinjia Hermitage once printed a replica of the \*Hongjiao Academy's Abridged Canon\*; after the government relocated to Taiwan, the Chinese Buddhist Cultural Center reprinted the \*Taishō Canon\*; these have been widely distributed far and wide, and although they are sufficient for study, since the establishment of the Republic of China, we have yet to compile our own Buddhist canon, which many consider a regrettable shortcoming.

> Mr. Qu Wenliu, a lay Buddhist, held high-ranking positions in both regional governance and the central government. His administrative acumen and literary talent had long been esteemed by his contemporaries. In his later years, he turned to the study of Buddhism, embracing the Three Secret Dharma Seals. At the age of eighty, he undertook the monumental task of revising the Chinese Buddhist Canon. Monastics and laypeople alike responded with support, and celestial beings offered their protection. He slightly modified the traditional structure, organizing the canon into four major categories: 1. The Main Canon, which includes scriptures that had been officially included in previous canons. 2. The Supplementary Canon, which includes scriptures that had not been included in previous canons. 3. The Translation Canon, which includes scriptures translated into Western languages. 4. The General Catalogue, which includes catalogues of various canons and related reference works. The Main Canon alone contains over 3,900 scriptures, surpassing even the \*Siku Quanshu\* (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries), which contains about 3,400 works (excluding those listed only in its catalogue). This count does not yet include the Supplementary Canon, the Translation Canon, and the General Catalogue. This vast and magnificent collection stands alongside the Confucian classics like Mount Hua, presenting a splendid panorama of Eastern culture.

> I am honored to have been part of the initiative for this project, and I am delighted to see its publication begin. Thus, I offer these few words to preface its opening.
