Noble laymen and laywomen, listen carefully. After the Buddha's passing, during the age of the Semblance Dharma, you should only revere and uphold the Prātimokṣa. The Prātimokṣa—that is this very precepts. Holding these precepts is like encountering light in the darkness, like a poor person finding treasure, like a sick person gaining healing, like a prisoner being released from jail, like a traveler returning home after a long journey. Know that this is the great teacher of all beings; it is no different from the Buddha himself being in the world.
A fearful mind is hard to generate; a virtuous mind is hard to develop. Therefore, it is said: Do not think a small offense is harmless, for it has no consequence. Though a drop of water is tiny, it gradually fills a large vessel. If you recklessly commit offenses, you will fall into the endless Avici hell. It is extremely rare to obtain a human body; once lost, it may not be regained for ten thousand eons.
Our youthful vigor does not stop for a moment, like a galloping horse. Human life is impermanent, more fleeting than flowing water. Though we are alive today, tomorrow is uncertain. Now is the very time. All of you should be single-minded, diligently cultivate, and strive with vigor. Be careful not to be lazy, negligent, or indulgent in sleep. By night, focus your mind and recollect the Three Jewels. Do not let your time pass by in vain, only to face deep regret later, having ultimately gained nothing.
All of you, without exception, heed these precepts and practice accordingly.
Venerable ones, spring passes, and in the time it takes for a day and a month to go by, life shortens by a day and a night. The remaining time is but a year and three months. Old age and death draw near; the Buddha’s teachings are fading. Venerable ones, laymen and laywomen, seek the Way with single-minded diligence. Why? Because all Buddhas, through single-minded diligence, attained unsurpassed enlightenment, not to mention other wholesome paths and practices.
While you are still strong and healthy, strive with effort to cultivate goodness. How can you fail to seek the Way? Why give in to indulgence and seek only pleasure? This day has passed, and with it, life diminishes, like a fish in dwindling water—what joy is there? Among those here, those who have not yet received the Bodhisattva precepts and are impure have already left the assembly. Now that we are joined in harmony, what do we wish to do? (This question is asked three times.) How many absent ones are entrusted to receive the Bodhisattva precepts? Those who aspire and the pure assembly should listen with one mind.
Upholding precepts purifies body and speech, Focuses the mind on right mindfulness, Deep learning gives rise to true wisdom— All this begins with moral discipline.
Precepts are a treasure of subtle wonders, One of seven worldly riches. Precepts are a great ship, Able to cross the sea of birth and death.
Precepts are a clear pool, Washing away all burning afflictions. Precepts are a wish-fulfilling gem, Dissolving poison and cutting wrong views.
Precepts are an everlasting companion, Able to pass through dangerous and evil paths. Precepts are the gate to the nectar of truth, Where all noble sages roam.
Those who uphold precepts have no arrogance, Are diligent and never negligent. They grasp no fixed notion of “precepts,” And harbor no corrupt thoughts.
This is called pure moral discipline, Praised by all Buddhas. Precepts are the fortress of the Dharma, Blocking the thieves of defilement.
Precepts are a valiant general, Crushing Mara’s armies. Precepts are a wish-fulfilling gem, Granting treasures to merchants.
Precepts are a splendid tower, Where one delights in all states of meditation. Precepts are level ground, And tranquility is the house.
Wisdom and emptiness adorn with power, Ten thousand practices complete their purpose. Until one attains Buddhahood, All this begins with moral discipline.
Therefore, the wise Guard precepts with a resolute mind. They would rather lose their life Than ever violate them.
With palms pressed together, I make an offering to the Buddha, Lion of the Śākyas. Now I wish to explain the precepts— Everyone listen with one mind.
Even for a minor offense, The heart should feel great fear. If guilty, repent with all your heart, And never commit it again.
The mind, like a wild horse, gallops toward evil paths, Hard to restrain through negligence. The Buddha’s perfect precepts Act like a sharp bridle.
The precepts taught by the Buddha’s mouth— The virtuous can faithfully accept them. Such a person tames the horse’s mind, Able to defeat the army of defilements.
If one does not accept this teaching, Nor delight in these precepts, That person’s mind remains untamed, Sunk within the army of defilements.
If a person guards precepts, Like a cat or ox cherishing its tail, They bind their mind without negligence, As a monkey caught in chains.
Day and night they strive diligently, Seeking the treasure of wisdom. Such a person, in the Buddha’s teaching, Can attain a pure life.
Noble laymen and laywomen, listen carefully. Today, the fifteenth day of the month, is the observance for upholding the Bodhisattva precepts. All of you should concentrate and listen well. Those who have offenses should confess; those who are without should remain silent. By remaining silent, you are understood to be pure and worthy of the Bodhisattva precepts of the laymen and laywomen. The preamble to the Bodhisattva precepts has concluded. Now I ask you, noble ones: Is this assembly pure? (Ask three times). By your silence, noble ones, I understand that this assembly is pure. Therefore, let this matter be upheld as such.
Bodhisattvas and great beings, in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—in all four postures—cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The six perfections are practiced without distinction between friend or foe, treating all like beloved children. Offerings of both material wealth and the Dharma are given without discrimination.
When practicing the perfection of giving (Dana Paramita), one transcends the realm of hungry ghosts through generosity.
Those who are stingy and do not give, driven by endless craving and insatiable desire, fall into the hungry ghost realm.
Therefore, one should cultivate the perfection of giving to abandon and eliminate the hungry ghost path.
