> Like the Poor Who Find Treasure, Chapter 37

> "All of you should broadly cultivate the roots of virtue. Do not violate the moral prohibitions. Practice patience and diligence, with a compassionate mind focused single-pointedly. Observing pure precepts for one day and one night is better than doing good for a hundred years in the Land of Immeasurable Life. Why is this? In that Buddha's land, everyone accumulates virtue and every kind of goodness—there is not the slightest trace of evil. Here, practicing goodness for ten days and ten nights is better than doing good for a thousand years in the Buddha lands of other directions. Why is this? In those other Buddha lands, blessings come naturally, and there is no ground for creating evil. Only in this world is there little goodness and much evil—people drink suffering and eat poison, never finding peace. Out of compassion for all of you, I have earnestly taught and guided you, giving you the scriptures and the Dharma—hold them all in mind, think on them all, and put them all into practice. Elders and juniors, men and women, relatives and friends—each should teach one another and mutually encourage and restrain one another. Be harmonious and reasonable, joyful, kind, and filial. If you do something wrong, repent of it yourselves. Turn from evil and do good. If you hear the truth in the morning, change by evening. Uphold the scriptures and precepts as a poor person treasures something precious. Correct the past and cultivate the future. Purify your hearts and change your ways. Then naturally, what you vow for will come to you. Wherever the Buddha has walked, no country, city, or settlement fails to receive transformation. The whole world becomes harmonious. Sun and moon are clear and bright. Wind and rain come at the right times. Disasters and epidemics do not arise. The country is prosperous and the people secure. Weapons become useless. Virtue is honored and benevolence is promoted. People devote themselves to propriety and yielding. In the land there are no thieves, and no wrongs or injustices. The strong do not oppress the weak. Everyone finds their proper place. I care for all of you more than parents think of their children. I have become a Buddha in this world to overcome evil with good, to pull out the suffering of birth and death, and to help you attain the five virtues and rise to the peace of the unconditioned. After I enter nirvana, the scriptures and the path will gradually disappear. People will become flattering and false, and will again commit many evils. The five burnings and five pains will, in time, grow even worse. All of you must teach and admonish one another according to the Buddha's scriptures and Dharma—do not violate them." Bodhisattva Maitreya joined his palms and spoke: "The evils and sufferings of people in this world are indeed so. The Buddha, in all compassion, saves them all and frees them. Having received the Buddha's weighty instructions, we dare not go against or neglect them."
