### 禮佛現光第三十八

> Bowing to the Buddha, the Light Appears, Chapter 38

佛告阿難：「若曹欲見無量清淨平等覺，及諸菩薩、阿羅漢等所居國土，應起西向當日沒處，恭敬頂禮，稱念南無阿彌陀佛。」阿難即從座起，面西合掌，頂禮白言：「我今願見極樂世界阿彌陀佛，供養奉事，種諸善根。」頂禮之間，忽見阿彌陀佛，容顏廣大、色相端嚴，如黃金山，高出一切諸世界上。又聞十方世界諸佛如來，稱揚讚歎阿彌陀佛種種功德，無礙無斷。阿難白言：「彼佛淨剎，得未曾有。我亦願樂生於彼土。」世尊告言：「其中生者，已曾親近無量諸佛，植眾德本。汝欲生彼，應當一心歸依瞻仰。」作是語時，阿彌陀佛即於掌中放無量光，普照一切諸佛世界。時諸佛國皆悉明現，如處一尋，以阿彌陀佛殊勝光明極清淨故。於此世界所有黑山、雪山、金剛、鐵圍、大小諸山，江河、叢林、天人宮殿，一切境界無不照見。譬如日出明照世間，乃至泥犁、谿谷、幽冥之處，悉大開闢、皆同一色。猶如劫水彌滿世界，其中萬物沉沒不現，滉瀁浩汗唯見大水。彼佛光明亦復如是，聲聞、菩薩一切光明悉皆隱蔽，唯見佛光明耀顯赫。此會四眾、天龍八部、人非人等，皆見極樂世界種種莊嚴。阿彌陀佛於彼高座，威德巍巍、相好光明。聲聞、菩薩，圍繞恭敬。譬如須彌山王出於海面，明現照耀，清淨平正，無有雜穢及異形類，唯是眾寶莊嚴，聖賢共住。阿難及諸菩薩眾等，皆大歡喜，踊躍作禮，以頭著地，稱念南無阿彌陀三藐三佛陀。諸天人民以至蜎飛蠕動，覩斯光者，所有疾苦莫不休止，一切憂惱莫不解脫，悉皆慈心作善、歡喜快樂。鐘磬、琴瑟、箜篌樂器，不鼓自然皆作五音。諸佛國中，諸天人民各持花香，來於虛空散作供養。爾時極樂世界，過於西方百千俱胝那由他國，以佛威力如對目前。如淨天眼觀一尋地，彼見此土亦復如是，悉覩娑婆世界，釋迦如來及比丘眾圍繞說法。

> The Buddha said to Ananda, "If you wish to see the Buddha of Infinite Purity, Equality, and Enlightenment, and the lands where the bodhisattvas, arhats, and others dwell, you should face west, toward the place where the sun sets, bow in reverence, and recite 'Namo Amitabha Buddha.'" Ananda immediately rose from his seat, faced west with palms together, bowed, and said, "I now wish to see Amitabha Buddha in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, to make offerings and serve him, and to plant roots of goodness." Even as he bowed, suddenly Amitabha Buddha appeared—his countenance vast and majestic, his form dignified and perfect, like a mountain of gold towering above all the worlds. And Ananda heard all the Buddhas and Tathagatas throughout the ten directions praising the countless virtues of Amitabha Buddha without cease or obstruction. Ananda said, "The Buddha's pure land—such a thing has never been seen before. I too wish and long to be born in that land." The World-Honored One told him, "Those who are born there have already drawn near to countless Buddhas and planted abundant roots of virtue. If you wish to be born there, you should single-mindedly take refuge and gaze upon him in reverence." As these words were spoken, Amitabha Buddha emitted immeasurable light from the palm of his hand, illuminating all the Buddha worlds everywhere. At that moment, all Buddha lands appeared vividly, as close as if they were an arm's length away, because of the supreme purity of Amitabha Buddha's extraordinary radiance. In this world, all the black mountains, snow mountains, diamond mountains, iron ring mountains, great and small mountains, rivers, forests, and the palaces of gods and humans—every single sight was fully illuminated. It was like the sun rising and lighting up the world, so that even hells, ravines, and the darkest depths were all thrown wide open and shone with one unified color. It was like a deluge flooding the world, where all things are submerged and invisible, and only the vast, boundless water is seen. The Buddha's light was just like this: the light of all shravakas and bodhisattvas was completely overshadowed, and only the Buddha's radiance shone forth brilliantly. The four assemblies gathered there, along with the eight classes of gods and dragons, humans and non-humans, all saw the many splendors of the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Amitabha Buddha sat upon his lofty throne, majestic in virtue and dignity, adorned with marks of beauty and radiance. Shravakas and bodhisattvas surrounded him with reverence. Like Mount Sumeru rising above the ocean surface, shining brightly, pure and level, without any impurity or discordant forms—adorned only with myriad treasures, where sages and saints dwell together. Ananda and all the bodhisattvas were filled with great joy, leaped up and bowed in reverence, touching their heads to the ground, and recited, "Namo Amitabha Samyak-sambuddha." All the gods and people, down to the tiniest insects that crawl or fly, upon seeing this light—all their pains and afflictions ceased, all their worries and sorrows were released, and they all felt loving-kindness, did good deeds, and were filled with joy and happiness. Bells, chimes, harps, and stringed instruments, without being struck, spontaneously played the five tones. In all the Buddha lands, gods and people each held flowers and incense, came into the sky, and scattered them as offerings. At that time, the Land of Ultimate Bliss, though beyond the western direction by hundreds of thousands of millions of countless Buddha lands, appeared before them as if face to face through the Buddha's majestic power. Just as with pure divine sight one sees a spot an arm's length away, so too they saw this land of ours—all beheld the Saha World, where Shakyamuni Tathagata was surrounded by his assembly of monks and was teaching the Dharma.
