I scarcely hope to receive a human body and be fortunate enough to hear the Buddha’s name. If past conditions bring joy, who would not strive? Thus, I have taken up the practice—reciting the Buddha’s name day and night without fail—and my aspiration is rebirth in the Pure Land of Peace and Nourishment, never forgetting it. For this reason, I now urge progress toward rebirth in accordance with the Tathāgata’s true teachings, following the Bodhisattva’s treatise on the teachings of the Pure Land’s source and depth, which is called profound. I record this for distant ages—may future sages not mock it. I wish that all beings may together be reborn in the Land of Peace and Bliss. Written in the autumn of the Jōgen era’s third year, on the twenty-third day of the eighth month at the monastery of the Good Guide Tradition, a humble monk (a certain person) records this modest view, sketching only a rough outline.
