> Tea Server and Almsgiver

> The tea of Jian溪 is famed across the land, Valued by all, past and present. Yet only those of the Zen school Truly grasp its essence. Wind Cave sent off a traveler, Xiang Yan dreamed dreams of old, Ancient Buddha Zhao Zhou Asked whether one had arrived or not. Now Master Piao Xiu Offers this same tribute. Each share becomes a gift of wisdom, Empty birth and form together praised. When the source is truly seen, One use becomes all uses.

> Things follow sweetness and softness, drawn toward what they crave, But tea alone stands stern and strict in its flavor. An old monk tastes it, and his dream becomes whole— Opening his throat, stretching his mouth, he longs to speak of Zen. A young monk tastes it, and forgets a hundred worries— Shouldering his pack, he walks straight into the tea mountains. Monks, old and young alike, all delight in tea, Inquiring after the home of the Wuyi immortals. Wait for me next spring, when I wake from my dream— I'll borrow your Hao Spring to fashion a tea cauldron.

> Drinking the wine of Samadhi, one gets drunk; When sitting in meditation, one only dozes off. Gently, do not startle it— Send it off to Tea Mountain, and it will naturally see Zhang San, Encounter Li Si, and seize them right away— Truly sharp and quick! A branch of spring news has its own reason; Six-petaled flying blossoms are not alike. Arriving at Xiufeng, truly gaining ground, Elder monks from all directions gather like clouds. Stepping over the triple gate, pouring a cup of wine, Exchanging eyes, plucking the nose— Iron-faced old Chan master, are you still well? At home, reminiscing about old times, you must be at ease. The fragrance of rice reminds me of your vegetarian meals; The cold, clear well recalls the sweet spring water.

> True struggle, nine soups, clouds rise, snow offers tribute; Beyond the remaining inch of jade, not a single flaw. The spring chill pays no mind to matters of the mountain; Year after year, sealed and inscribed, it marks my home.

> The clay basin trembles like thunder, awakening a thousand hills at dawn, Fragrance drifts across the ridges, carried on both sleeves of wind, Adding splendor to the old Chan master’s wondrous state— In Jiangxi, one sip from the rabbit-hair teacup, all within this bowl.

> Now that I, old and without limits, send you off with a perilous verse; Not plucking poplar blossoms, but ahead, when asked again, This yellow-faced Zen monk will drink strong tea with you.

> This monk’s hand and eye, truly grasped in daily life— Left hand begs for Jian溪 tea, right hand offers Lianjiang tribute. Swiftly seizing two serpents, twisting them into one grip, Watch the winter snow melt, and spring thunder stir. Three lines, two verses, as a tea-offering to the buddhas— Dharma-flavor, dharma-joy, dharma-wealth, Nourishing the spirit, sustaining life, granting wisdom. Between giver and receiver, there is no empty gain, no empty loss. I too have not fully realized this truth, yet from within it I breathe out. Cutting off the eloquent tongue, turning the monk’s very nose around— Whoever comes, I fill a cup for them: Watch them stumble east and fall west, drunk with the tea. Once drunk, each rises—outside the gate, dawn mountains spread their green.

> A single seal of Dangyang, wondrous, without a single mark, Shame on the eastern mountain, for it has descendants. Saint or ordinary, all are sealed and settled alike, Why not hold the bowl and knock on others' doors?

> No disgrace is greater than begging, No joy surpasses wanting nothing. If one grasps the essence of wanting nothing, Though I beg, how could I feel shame? A monk dwells among white clouds, His heart companions them. At dawn he leaves the mountain, By summer's approach he returns. The vast earth is my patron, Plum blossoms and apricot blooms follow in turn. Beneath green willows he asks the way to the capital— Every gate has a path, all open wide. The Zen of the patriarchs—alive, vibrant! Long-grained rice, a full bowl scooped high.

> Children of the Buddha, in daily life, you observe the world and see it as perfectly harmonious, without impurity or flaw. But if you try to enter reality as you perceive it, giving and taking, clashing and colliding, you will still find yourself blocked and stuck. I have practiced begging for alms—now I teach you this: to attain true completeness, first shatter all assumptions. When not even a single hair remains, and distinctions like dust-motes and realms vanish, then from all eight directions there is no front or back. It is like grasping at existence or nonexistence in your palm, or asking whether "is" or "is not" resides in yourself. Existence and nonexistence, is and is not—these do not come from outside. So who is there to rejoice or to fear? Children of the Buddha, hold this teaching, enter this realm, and manifest within it. The furnace of the Dan Mountain is opened for you—return at year's end, and your gold will have been refined a hundred times.

> A practitioner carries their teaching wherever they go— In taverns and fish markets, the path is still open. As long as the pantry holds salt and rice, The Dharma of Ji Mountain naturally flourishes.

> The Buddha and all beings share a bond from long ago, Entering the world, one phrase is spoken to make it known: Before your eyes, do not give rise to greedy attachment, For the Three Realms offer no safety—like being scorched by fire.

> The enlightened one sees no narrowness in the dusty world— Yet with this single insight, A long-handled strainer comes into hand— Used upside down or sideways, it sweeps through wind and rain with ease. From South Street to North Street they go, From East Garden they beg, West Garden's greens they obtain. Ah, haha—how strange it is! Those who truly understand naturally cherish this way of life.
