> Mr. Zhou from Runan, whose given name is Gang and courtesy name is Zongzheng, said to me: The story of Lü Dongbin visiting Huanglong was traditionally passed down as a Chan Buddhist narrative, with detailed accounts recorded in various scriptures. However, in April of this year, a Taoist priest named Miao Shangcheng at the Five Sages Temple near the North Bridge in the forest city, on his own initiative, painted a picture of Huanglong and Lü Dongbin lecturing on rites, and compiled a book entitled \*The Divine Transformation Illustrations\*. In this work, he attributed the virtues of Chan Buddhism to Taoist accomplishments, and reduced the teachings of Chan to the level of Taoist folk beliefs. This is a case of falsehood breeding falsehood, confusing people's minds. Have you seen this? I replied, "I have seen it. It is nothing more than the ramblings of a child. These reckless, baseless lies are fabricated out of thin air. Those people do not practice true virtue, but only boast and deceive." During the Jin Dynasty, Wang Fu falsely created the \*Scripture of the Conversion of the Barbarians\*, intentionally slandering the Buddha. Throughout successive dynasties, this work was prohibited and ordered to be burned. Anyone who privately possessed it was severely punished. During the Later Wei and Later Zhou dynasties, there were figures like Zhang of Zhou, Zhao Guizhen of the Tang, and Lin Lingsu of the Song, who all depended on magical arts to slander the Buddha's Dharma. A Taoist from Moling, because he saw the ten admonitions of Venerable Yuan Gong, which included the line, "If you do not believe, just wait and see the registrar of the underworld," took this opportunity to fabricate a \*Registrar of the Underworld\*. In this fabrication, he invented a story of Emperor Wen of Wei asking Prime Minister Li about his nightly judgments in the underworld. He collected ideas about cause and effect from Buddhist scriptures and created a book called \*The Registrar of the Underworld\*, which slanders even Vipasyin Buddha, claiming he also once retired from his position. Alas! Such people do not know the hierarchy of sages, nor do they understand the depth of the Great Way. Acting on their own whims, they deceive the world. This is something that even Peng Meng could not bear to do! Their frantic, fabricated words: During the Song dynasty in the Xining period, a man named Dao Guangxian was originally a monk. He imitated Zhang Pingshu's cultivation practices, and so let his hair grow back. Even intelligent people fell into his deception, let alone ordinary folk! The Buddha's Dharma is the true Dharma. Zhang Pingshu's methods are merely alchemical techniques. To abandon this true Dharma and follow those alchemical techniques—is that wisdom or ignorance? One should observe with reason to avoid confusion. Furthermore, it is said that Zhang Pingshu could project his spirit to Yangzhou to appreciate the qiong flower. But he did not know that by the time of the Xining period, the qiong flower of Yangzhou had already been decayed for over four hundred years, ever since the time of Emperor Yang of Sui. This empty boast is now exposed. Do you understand this? Master Miao also claims that Huanglong and Lü Dongbin projected their spirits to Yangzhou to appreciate the qiong flower. But both Huanglong and Lü Dongbin lived in the late Tang dynasty. By then, the qiong flower had already disappeared for over two hundred years! Moreover, spirit projection is a technique of the living. Alchemists treasure it as their main practice, but our tradition strictly forbids it, as such baseless talk only deceives the common people. When Lü Dongbin visited Master Huanglong, Master Huanglong was giving a lecture. He said, "There is someone in the assembly who secretly seeks the Dharma." Lü Dongbin replied, "I am a follower of clouds and water." Master Huanglong asked, "When the clouds part and the water dries up, what then?" Lü Dongbin could not answer. Master Huanglong said, "You just ask, and I will answer for you." Lü Dongbin asked, "When the clouds part and the water dries up, what then?" Master Huanglong replied, "Huanglong will appear." Lü Dongbin said angrily, "What about the meaning of 'a single grain of millet containing the whole world, and a half-sheng cauldron brewing mountains and rivers'?" Master Huanglong said, "That is nothing but guarding a corpse." Lü Dongbin retorted, "But I have the elixir of immortality in my pouch!" Master Huanglong said, "Even if you endure for eight thousand kalpas, in the end, you will fall into emptiness." Lü Dongbin left in anger, and at night, he tried to attack Master Huanglong with his flying sword, but the sword could not enter and stood stuck in the ground. Lü Dongbin then bowed and asked for the teaching. Master Huanglong shouted, "What is the meaning of 'a single grain of millet containing the whole world'?" At these words, Lü Dongbin had an awakening and composed a verse of repentance. Master Miao previously printed an image of Lü Dongbin with an inscription, "I wish to support his teaching, but others will destroy me. Who knows that the old monk Huanglong is now?" If this is supposed to be Lü's self-inscription, then Lü has not been reborn in over six hundred years. He has never made such a statement before. Why would it suddenly appear now, trying to overturn six hundred years of established truth? And if this is Master Miao's own inscription, then it expresses Lü's intention. This lie simply cannot stand. Alas! The ancients were not bound by stubbornness; they would follow whichever principle was more reasonable. Confucius said, "The noble person has no fixed preferences or aversions in the world; he aligns with what is right." Lü Dongbin simply changed his alchemical practices and turned to the true Dharma. This is perfectly reasonable, so why hide it? The Buddha's teaching is the Great Way that governs the three realms. Its roots are deep and its foundations firm; it cannot be shaken. The three persecutions of Buddhism all failed to destroy it, and it only flourished all the more. What need is there for a single alchemist to try to support it? How foolish! Last year, Master Miao printed another board with the inscription, "Lü Dongbin never met Huanglong." This year, he printed another board entitled \*The Divine Transformation Illustrations\*. Will this slander never cease? It may deceive the foolish, but it will not fool the wise. The \*Book of Rites\* says, "To praise one's ancestors for merits they did not possess is a falsehood." Han Yu refused to write history for fear of the karmic consequences of praise and blame. He said, "If not for human retribution, there will certainly be heavenly punishment." What kind of man is Master Miao? Without any careful thought, he rashly fabricates empty words and slanders the ancient sages, bringing condemnation upon himself.

> Huangpi asked: "What about the Dongji tradition?" Huangpi replied: "The Huangpi tradition is the great path of Chan meditation to awaken to the essence, see one's true nature, and realize the mind. It is the orthodox lineage of the Buddha, which molds and transforms the great creation, allowing one to transcend birth and death and go beyond the three realms. As for Dongji, it takes yin and yang as the tiger, uses bodily fluids as lead and mercury, takes the primal energy as the elixir for returning to the source, and refines through effort to merely prolong life. I am unwilling to speak of whether the practices I have studied are good or not. As for the common principles of the world, scholars can understand them on their own."

> A student asked: "You speak of escaping birth and death and transcending the Three Realms. What are these Three Realms?" The teacher replied: "The Three Realms are the Realm of Desire, the Realm of Form, and the Formless Realm. All beings in the six ordinary realms dwell within these three, and are subject to the cycle of birth and death. The six ordinary realms are what we call the Six Paths: the realms of gods, humans, demigods, hungry ghosts, animals, and hell-beings."

> Q: What does it mean to transcend the three realms? A: Transcending the three realms means being free from the cycle of birth and death. This applies to four kinds of saints: Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Śrāvakas. These four saints attain freedom at will, benefiting both themselves and others. Within the three realms and beyond the three realms, they neither dwell nor fail to dwell. In summary, this is called the Ten Dharma Realms: the Four Saints and the Six Ordinary Beings. Q: Please explain the states of the Ten Dharma Realms, specifically the Four Saints and the Six Ordinary Beings. A: The scriptures and teachings explain this in detail; for now, I will give a brief overview.

> The official said, “Lord Mu, in which of the Ten Dharma Realms does he reside?” The Buddha replied, “That is a mistaken man. People’s minds are not the same, and each follows their own karma. Those with meditative focus and virtue, free from ego and possessiveness, are drawn into the realm of the gods. Those who practice both meditation and moral virtue but harbor arrogance are drawn into the realm of the asuras. Those without meditative focus or virtue, who only practice techniques and arts, are drawn into the realm of beings. Those who slander the Buddha’s teachings are drawn into the realm of hell.”

> The Master asked: "What is the Way of Laozi?" The reply: "It is the Great Way. Guanyinzi, Liezi, and Zhuangzi all followed his teachings, and they are all part of the Great Way. Laozi said: 'The sage holds to the One and becomes a model for the world' — this is what Tang and Yu meant by 'Refine the one mind and hold steadfast to the Middle Way.' He also said: 'Always be without desire in order to observe the subtlety' — this is what Zisi meant when he said: 'The Way of the noble person is both vast and hidden.' And again: 'Always have desire in order to observe the boundary' — this is like the kites soaring in the sky and the fish leaping in the deep, showing that all can be perceived above and below. Guanyinzi said: 'Those who excel in my Way understand Heaven and exhaust the spiritual, reaching the ultimate in life and destiny through each single thing' — which is what Zengzi meant by 'True knowledge lies in the investigation of things.' Liezi said: 'When used, it fills the six directions; when set aside, no one knows where it goes' — which is what Confucius meant by 'When expanded, it encompasses the entire universe; when rolled up, it retreats and hides within the secret.' Zhuangzi said: 'Where does the Way go that it does not exist?' — which is what Confucius meant by 'Take me as your teacher? I have nothing to teach you.' He also said: 'It governs Heaven and Earth and is the storehouse of all things' — which is what Mencius meant by 'All things are complete within me.' And again: 'Like a newborn calf that does not seek the reasons for things' — which is what Mencius meant by 'The noble person never loses the mind of a pure child.' Nevertheless, when it comes to penetrating the profound mystery of the Way and entering and leaving the gateways of life and death, there are indeed degrees of subtlety and coarseness, and degrees of closeness and distance. One cannot simply dismiss the virtues of Laozi, Guanyinzi, Liezi, and Zhuangzi. The Song-dynasty Confucians immersed themselves in Chan Buddhism, and whenever they wrote books or established doctrines, they all used Chan principles. Thus Confucian learning changed into 'Dao-learning,' and this was a good thing in the world. When Daoism turned into elixir cultivation, it fell short of becoming true Confucian learning. What a pity!"

> It is asked: Which came first, the Buddha or Laozi? The Buddha was born in the city of Kapilavastu in ancient India, as the crown prince of King Suddhodana of the Shakya clan. His birth occurred in China during the twenty-fourth year of King Zhao of Zhou, on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. He entered nirvana at age seventy-nine in the fifty-second year of King Mu of Zhou. Four hundred and twenty-two years after the Buddha's birth, in the third year of King Ding of Zhou, Laozi was born in Lai Township, Bozhou (present-day Ku County), in the state of Chu. In the fourth year of King Jian of Zhou, at age twenty-three, Laozi served as a librarian. Thirteen years later, he was promoted to the position of Royal Archivist. By the first year of King Jing of Zhou, Laozi was eighty-four years old. At that time, the seven great powers were contending for supremacy, and the world was in chaos. Hearing that the Buddha's teachings in the West promoted a state of non-interference and peace without striving, Laozi desired to go to India to settle there. The poet Mr. Hu Zeng recorded this in his poem: > "The Seven Kingdoms fought with spears and halberds, > And no one in the world could live in peace. > Laozi, yearning for the land of heavenly bamboo, > Had his oxcart cross the Flowing Sands." Thus, Laozi left the pass and, before reaching the Flowing Sands, died at the Li section of Fufeng County, where he was buried. Qin Yi visited to mourn him, wept three times, and then left. The Grand Historian Sima Qian wrote: "Laozi, in the declining years of the Zhou dynasty, was a historian in the imperial archives." \*(Note: from the Historical Records)\* The "Three Teachings Song" says: > In the fourth year of King Zhao's reign, the fourth ruler, > The Tathagata was born in Kapilavastu. > In the fifty-second year of King Mu, at eighty, > The Tathagata entered nirvana. > One thousand eight hundred years later, > The Dharma flowed into China during the Yongping era of Han Ming. > Buddha came first, four hundred and twenty-two years before Laozi, > Who was born in King Ding's time. > Buddha came first, four hundred and seventy-seven years before Confucius, > Who was born in King Ling's time. > To repay the toils of this weary life, I reverently say: > The tripod stands on three legs but returns to one. \*(Note: from the Numerical Dharma-Essentials)\* Thus it is that the Buddha came before Laozi.
