Eight black petals, perfectly paired, form the eight-petaled lotus. The light of this flower shines universally throughout the ten directions, eternally tranquil yet ever illuminating. In this tranquility, its function is unobstructed and constant, transcending words and extinguishing conceptual thought.
The five great colored lotus seats described above are the dwelling place of the Great Sun Buddha. The lotus seat has been explained. Now, regarding the fivefold teaching of the Dharma Realm: the essence is revealed, while the function remains hidden. Briefly focusing on the essence, setting aside the branches and leaves—within each realm, returning to the truth becomes the character for "Buddha," while delusion becomes the character for "poison." Yet, even when becoming Buddha, there is no increase; even when becoming poison, there is no decrease. Hence, it is said: neither increasing nor decreasing. This is spoken from the perspective of the arising-and-ceasing gate.
If we speak of reality, there should be two gates: the gate of Suchness and the gate of arising-and-ceasing. Raising one includes all. All that has been said above is this: the gate where the essence inherently possesses virtues and is freely at ease.
