> Grand Tutor of the Heqing Principality, Prince Yi, gave up his residence to establish this temple. It is located on the north side of the Imperial Way, one li outside the Ximing Gate. Among the imperial princes, Prince Yi was most famous for his conduct. Emperor Shizong held him in special regard, more so than his other younger brothers. In the fourth year of the Yanchang era (515 CE), Emperor Shizong passed away. Prince Yi, together with Prince Yong of Gaoyang and Prince Huai of Guangping, received the imperial edict to assist the young Emperor Xiaoming. At that time, the emperor was only six years old, and the Empress Dowager acted as regent in his place. Because Prince Yi was renowned for his virtue and close familial relationship, and because he embodied the Way and upheld righteousness, she consulted him on all matters, great and small. Thus, during the Xiping and Shengui eras (516-519 CE), his influence rivaled that of the sovereign himself. His residence was vast and luxurious, surpassing even that of the Gaoyang Prince. In the northwest corner stood a tower that rose above the Lingyun Terrace, looking down upon the court and marketplace, reaching to the skyline of the capital. As the ancient poem says, "In the northwest there is a tall tower, its top level with the floating clouds." Beneath the tower were the Scholar Grove Hall and the Retired Visitor Hall, which were constructed in the same style as the Qingshu Hall. With its earthen hills and fishing terrace, it surpassed all others of its time. Slanting peaks seemed to enter the windows, winding ponds encircled the main halls, trees rustled and birds sang, and flower beds and medicinal plants lined the steps. Prince Yi cherished guests and valued literary talent. Talented scholars from across the empire gathered around him like spokes of a wheel. The officials and staff of his household were all selected from the most outstanding individuals. On clear mornings with beautiful views, they would gaze into the distance from the southern terrace. Exquisite delicacies were laid out, qin and zither played together, fragrant wine filled the cups, and fine guests filled the seats. Even the King of Liang would have felt ashamed of his Rabbit Garden excursions, and Prince Cao Zhi would have blushed at his Owl Terrace feasts. In the early years of the Zhengguang era (520 CE), Yuan Cha seized power, imprisoned the Empress Dowager in the rear palace, and murdered Prince Yi in the Lower Secretariat. In the first year of the Xiaochang era (525 CE), when the Empress Dowager returned to power, she posthumously honored Prince Yi as Grand Tutor of the Heir Apparent, Grand General, Commander of All Military Affairs inside and outside the capital, granted the Emperor's ceremonial halberd, and provided a funeral with nine tassels, a phoenix carriage, a yellow canopy, a left-hand feathered flag, a mourning hearse, front and rear sections of feather-entwined and drum-playing guards, a hundred swordsmen of the tiger-guard rank, and two troupes of elegy singers—all funeral rites following the precedents set for the Prince of Jin, Anping Wang Fu. He was given the posthumous title "Wenxian" (Cultured and Worthy). His portrait was painted in the Jiangshi Hall, and Han Zixi, the magistrate of Heqing Principality, was promoted to Attendant of the Yellow Gate. His other officials were transferred to become imperial bodyguards—an honor unprecedented in recent times. To offer blessings for the repose of his soul, a five-story pagoda was built. Its craftsmanship was similar to that of the Yao-guang Temple.
