> The Chief Secretary and Governor of Sizhou, Prince Cheng Yang of Wei, <note>Ru Yin omits "Wei."</note> established this temple. It is located one li outside the West Yang Gate, south of the Imperial Road. During the Yong'an era, <note>Ru Yin says "Kang."</note> when the Prince of Beihai entered Luoyang, Emperor Zhuang fled north. All the other princes harbored divided loyalties, but Prince Cheng Yang alone followed Emperor Zhuang to the city of Zhangzi. With the major army blocked by the Yellow River, the outcome was uncertain. <note>Ru Yin switches the characters for "uncertain."</note> The prince vowed that if he could return to Luoyang, he would donate his residence as a temple. When the Prince of Beihai was defeated and scattered, the nation's fortunes brightened again, and the prince did indeed donate his residence. At the end of the Yong'an era, Emperor Zhuang plotted to kill Erzhu Rong but worried it might fail. He sought advice from Prince Cheng Yang, who said, "Use the pretext that the crown prince has been born. Rong will certainly enter the court, and then you can ambush and kill him." The emperor replied, "The empress has been pregnant for less than ten months; it is only the ninth month now. Can we really do this?" The prince said, "Women give birth after varying lengths of pregnancy—some longer, some shorter. There is nothing strange about it." The emperor accepted his plan and announced the birth of the crown prince. He sent the prince to deliver an imperial edict <note>Ru Yin and Zhao Kuang note variations in the text, with one version saying "held the edict."</note> to the residence of the Prince of Taiyuan, announcing the birth of the imperial heir. It happened that Rong was playing a board game with the Prince of Shangdang, Tian Mu. The prince took off Rong's hat and danced around joyfully. The prince was always magnanimous, his emotions never showing on his face. <note>Han and Wei use "盈" for "show."</note> He ran around inside and outside the palace, shouting with joy. Rong believed him and entered the court together with Tian Mu. When Emperor Zhuang heard that Rong had arrived, he involuntarily changed color. The Imperial Secretary Wen Zisheng said, <note>Ru Yin uses "升."</note> "Your Majesty's complexion has changed." The emperor repeatedly <note>Han and Wei omit "repeatedly."</note> called for wine and drank it before proceeding with the plan. After Rong and Tian Mu were killed, the emperor appointed the prince as Grand Preceptor and Minister of War, retaining his other posts. He commanded the imperial guards and was trusted with special responsibilities. When Erzhu Zhao captured Emperor Zhuang, the prince sought refuge with former Luoyang Magistrate Kou Zuren. Zuren's <note>Han and Wei do not repeat the name.</note> entire family had served as provincial governors under the prince's command. Because of this old bond of kindness, <note>Ru Yin omits "under his command" and uses "little" instead of "old bond." Han and Wei omit "kindness."</note> the prince went to him. Zuren said to his sons and younger brothers, "I have heard that Erzhu Zhao has placed a very high bounty on the Prince of Cheng Yang—whoever captures him will be made a marquis. Today our fortune has arrived!" So they beheaded the prince and delivered his head. When the prince first sought refuge in Zuren's house, he had brought one hundred catties of gold and fifty horses. Zuren coveted his wealth and property, and therefore committed this act. He divided the gold and horses equally among his close relatives. Indeed, as the saying goes: "A commoner is without fault, yet possessing a precious gem becomes his crime." Zhao received the prince's head but did not reward Zuren. Later, Zhao dreamed that the prince said, "I have two hundred <note>Han and Wei omit "two hundred" and say "one hundred."</note> catties of gold and one hundred horses stored at Zuren's house. You should take them." Zhao woke up and thought to himself, "The Prince of Cheng Yang held a high position and was wealthy; I have never heard that he was poor. I often went to his home to search for loot, <note>Han and Wei use "踪迹" for "search."</note> and there was never any gold or silver there. This dream might be true." At dawn, he raided Zuren's home and demanded the gold and horses. Zuren, thinking someone had informed on him, confessed out of fear, saying, "I actually received one hundred catties of gold and fifty horses." Zhao suspected he was hiding some, and demanded more based on the dream. Zuren's various storehouses contained thirty catties of gold and thirty <note>Ru Yin and Zhao Kuang say "fifty."</note> horses. He gave all of them to Zhao, but it still did not make up the full amount. <note>Han and Wei omit "give" and use "fill" instead of "make up."</note> Zhao became enraged. He captured Zuren, hung his head from a tall tree, tied a large stone to his feet, and beat him to death. People at the time considered this retribution. Yang Xuanzhi comments: "A house that does good deeds will surely have an abundance of blessings; a household of accumulated evil <note>Ru Yin and Han and Wei say "calamity."</note> will bring disaster upon itself." <note>Han and Wei say "disaster will gather."</note> Zuren betrayed kindness, bit the hand that fed him, and killed the prince out of greed for his possessions. The prince then appeared in a dream, exaggerated the amounts of gold and horses, and used Zhao's hand to kill him in turn. Zuren suffered every form of torture and experienced the utmost misery. Even the flogging of Chancellor Tian Fen by the Marquis of Weiqi, or the assassination of Yao Chang by the Qin Emperor, cannot compare to this.
