> The residence of Shi Zhong Shang Shu Ling Dongping Wang, Lüe, stands here. Lüe was born with exceptional intelligence and showed remarkable maturity even as a child. He was widely read, well-versed in all kinds of literature, and pursued the Way tirelessly. During the Shenguang era (520-525 AD), he served as Huangmen Shilang (Attendant to the Emperor). When Yuan Yi seized power and brutally persecuted the high ministers, Lüe secretly conspired with his elder brother, the Ci Shi of Xiangzhou, Zhongshan Wang Xi, to raise a righteous army and bring the usurpers to justice. However, their grand plan failed, and betrayal came from within their own circle. Lüe and his four brothers all suffered calamity, with only Lüe himself managing to flee south of the Yangtze River (to the Liang dynasty). The Liang emperor Xiao Yan had long heard of Lüe’s reputation. Seeing his dignified bearing and profound literary talent, he held him in high regard. He asked him: "How many people in Luoyang are like you?" Lüe answered: "When I served in our court, I temporarily held various posts. When it comes to the elegance of our ancestral temples, the richness of our bureaucracy, the gathering of talented officials like paired mandarin ducks, and the abundance of skilled craftsmen—people like me, as Zhao Zi once said, are countless, as abundant as cartloads and bushels." Xiao Yan laughed heartily and enfeoffed Lüe as Zhongshan Wang, granting him a fief of one thousand households and ceremonial privileges equal to a prince. He also appointed him as the Prefect of Xuancheng, granting him a military band and a thousand swordsmen. Lüe governed with strict integrity and gained a fine reputation. The nobles and officials in the eastern capital (Jiankang) were known for their extravagance and pride, but when they saw Lüe entering court, they all held him in awe. Soon after, he was promoted to General of Xuanwu and Ci Shi of Hengzhou. In the first year of Xiaochang (525 AD), Emperor Xiaoming pardoned the Wu (southern) man Jiang Ge, and requested Lüe to return to the north. Jiang Ge was a prominent general under Xiao Yan. Xiao Yan said to Lüe: "I would rather lose Jiang Ge than lose you, Wang Lüe." Lüe replied: "Your subject has endured bereavement and loss. My family's bones have yet to be collected. I beg to return to my country to honor the living and the dead." As he said this, he wept sorrowfully. Xiao Yan, moved by his grief, allowed him to leave and bestowed upon him five million cash, two hundred jin of gold, five hundred jin of silver, and countless brocades, embroideries, jewels, and rare treasures. He personally led over a hundred officials to see him off at the Yangtze River, where they composed five-character poems in his honor. Such was the respect and honor he received. As soon as Lüe crossed the Huai River, Emperor Xiaoming appointed him Shi Zhong (Attendant) and Yiyang Wang, with a fief of one thousand households. When Lüe arrived at the capital, the emperor issued an edict: "In the past, Liu Cang was good and benevolent, establishing Dongping, and Cao Zhi was skilled in literature, greatly expanding the state of Chen. Their reputations spread like solid rocks and nurtured the nation like impregnable fortresses. You, Shi Zhong Yiyang Wang Lüe, were born with royal nobility and inherited a distinguished family legacy. You are brilliant within and impressive without, and your brothers are equally outstanding. You put righteousness above your family and sacrificed your life for the nation. Your absolute loyalty and righteousness are never forgotten. Though you once fled to the south in exile, you have now returned to the capital. You have both will and integrity, and you can both begin and end. Your story should be passed down through history, shining like the sun and the moon. Before you arrived, I gave you the title based on your aspiration, hence you were enfeoffed as Yiyang Wang. However, the land there is a border region, and your fief lies in another territory. This is not entirely satisfactory. To match your virtue with an appropriate fief and to honor the legacy of our ancestors, you are now to be renamed as Dongping Wang, with the same number of households as before." Soon after, he was promoted to Shang Shu Ling (Director of the Secretariat), Si Tú (Minister of Education), and concurrently President of the National Academy, while retaining his position as Shi Zhong. Lüe was naturally refined and graceful. His sojourn in the south and return to the north only elevated his stature. His words and actions became a model for both the court and the people. In the first year of Jianyi (528 AD), he passed away at Heyin. He was posthumously granted the title of Tai Bao (Grand Guardian) and honoured as Wen Zhen (Cultured and Upright). His heir, Prince Jing Shi, later donated the family mansion to establish this temple.
