> I once read the "Shitong Bu'zhu" \[a commentary on historical methodology\], which states: "There are those who, serving as court historians, personally compiled and revised texts. Though they aimed for comprehensive coverage, their organizational skills were lacking. Simplifying would leave regrets because some content must be retained; including everything would hinder readability. Thus, they set apart rough material and arranged it as sub-notes, as seen in certain texts..." Among the examples given was Yang Xuanzhi's \*Luoyang Qielan Ji\* \[a Record of Buddhist Monasteries in Luoyang\]. It is known that Yang originally used large and small script to differentiate between the main text and annotations. However, in later editions, everything has been written continuously, mixing the annotations with the main text. I wished to follow the method used by Quan Xie Shan in his edition of \*Shui Jing Zhu\* \[a Commentary on the Water Classic\] and produce a corrected version. But since Yuan and Shou had already hand-collated it, I was unable to proceed. Now, in a newly obtained edition collated by Mao Fu Zi, I found that Mao, though widely experienced with old editions and rare copies, was utterly unaware of the large-and-small-script convention. This shows how long the error has persisted. Regrettably, I am too occupied and lack the time to complete this task. Until the day I can finish it, I merely mark this observation at the end, hoping future scholars of broad learning will follow this principle in their research.
