曩者顧文澗萍嘗病今世通行本伽藍記綱目混淆子注羼雜謂紫貴曰子多暇日能重為分晰一如劉氏知幾之所云乎從事經季悉心推究中間輟業未有所成吳甥次平乞假南旋娛親之暇兼治此書嵗籥一周定本遂出大略所據者如隱堂本所參考者何氏毛氏本復旁及于御覽廣記法苑珠林所引隻字片言咸為比校疑文訛句論斷獨伸遂廼條舉件繫成集證一卷復繪圖一篇列諸簡端余既自悼無成又惜顧文病廢不出無由商確義例而甚喜次平好學深思有功於古人匪淺也爰識數語以為緣起云

> Gu Wenjian Ping once lamented that current popular editions of the \*Record of Buddhist Monasteries in Luoyang\* suffered from disorganized outlines and intermingled commentary. He said to Zigu: "Since you have much free time, could you reorganize and clarify it, just as Liu Zhiji advocated?" For over a year, Zigu devoted himself to the work, but halfway through, he had to set it aside without completing it. Then Wu Ci, whose courtesy name is Ciping, returned south on leave to visit his parents. During his leisure time with family, he also took up this project. In the space of a year, a definitive edition was produced. The principal base text was the Yintang edition; supplemental references included the editions by Mr. He and Mr. Mao. Furthermore, he consulted every fragment and single phrase cited in the \*Imperial Reader\*, the \*Extensive Records\*, and the \*Forest of Pearls in the Dharmaratna Garden\*. Wherever the text was doubtful or errors had been introduced, he relied on his own judgment. Thus, he compiled a volume of collected annotations, organized by topic and entry, and added a map at the beginning. I lament both my own failure to complete the task and that Gu Wenjian Ping, bedridden and unable to travel, cannot discuss the editorial principles with me. Still, I am deeply pleased that Wu Ciping, so studious and thorough, has made no small contribution to the ancients. I thus write this brief preface to explain the origin of this work.
