> Best edition missing for \*Luoyang Qielan Ji\* — only the proofread block-print edition by Wu Ruozhun of Qiantang from the Daoguang \*Jiawu\* year (1834) was the finest. Since the blocks were destroyed during wartime, few prints survived. In the early Guangxu period, while staying in Daliang, I obtained one copy from the residence of Minister Zhou Zhigui. I intended to have it printed but did not succeed. Just then, Ruozhun’s younger cousin, Governor Baoxian (Wu Ruolang), who was then magistrate of Luoyang, was already reprinting the book based on the \*Han-Wei Congshu\* version. The craftsmanship was crude, and the editor had arbitrarily altered the text, making it riddled with errors and nearly unreadable. I sent him Wu’s edition and wrote in a letter: “Your family already has an excellent edition—why not reprint that instead of He Tang’s version?” Governor received the letter with delight, yet he hesitated and did not entrust it to the printer. Shortly after, he was replaced in office and ultimately never had it printed. When I asked for the original back, he replied, “I will eventually reprint it to fulfill my elder brother’s wish. The book is safe with me and will not be lost.” Several years later, Governor passed away, and the book could no longer be retrieved. In the winter of \*Renyin\* (1902), I met Grand Historian Miao Xiaoshan in Wuchang. Our conversation casually touched upon this work. The Grand Historian had two copies in his collection, so he gave one to me. I immediately had it printed to share with scholars. Minister Tao Zhai, the governor, possessed Yuan Shoujie’s hand-collated \*Gu-Jin Yi-Shi\* edition and Wang Meiping’s collated \*Huangchuan Wu\* edition. I borrowed both and compared them against my copy. Wang’s edition was too unreliable to serve as a reference; Yuan’s edition, which had been collated against the \*Shi-Li-Ju\* collection’s Mao Youzheng’s \*Ruyingtang\* edition, derived from the same source as Wu’s edition. Though there were minor differences, I dared not make alterations for fear of losing the original truth. I nevertheless appended Mao’s postscript recorded by Yuan at the end for reference. After the printing was completed, I documented its inception here at the preface. My sole regret is that Governor did not live to see it.
