> This was established by the Imperial Bodyguards and the Tiger Guard. South of the temple, there was the Rent Field Village. At first, Xiao Yan’s son, Prince Yuzhang named Zong, came to surrender and created three listening verses, which were later circulated among the people. Prince Zong’s courtesy name was Shi Zan. Xiao Yan, after staying at Jing Hui, changed his name to Zan. He married Princess Shouyang, the elder sister of Emperor Zhuang. Later, he was appointed Governor of Xuzhou (though some suspect the character Xu is a mistake for Qi). “How dare a Hu dog insult a princess of heaven?” Then he was strangled to death. > The main gate of the Chongxun Palace, where the Empress Dowager once lived, is located on the north side of the Imperial Road, two \*li\* east of the Dongyang Gate. The Jizhou Regional Inspector Li Shao lived in Huiwen Ward, which during the Jin Dynasty was known as Madao Ward. Flowers and fragrant plants were abundant. During the Yong'an era, just before he left, he took his leave of the emperor. Privately, he asked Attendant Gentleman Wen Zisheng: "I heard that the emperor's elder brother, Prince Pengcheng..." (All the people) knelt, kowtowing with bricks in hand, to show their goodwill. The people of Qi outwardly pretended to uphold benevolence and righteousness, (but) they would jostle shoulder to shoulder, eagerly pushing to enter. (Those of high status who were corrupt were also) readily inclined to drift toward them, being sweetly more indulgent than those from other regions. Those in the capital all considered this shameful. Among the Confucian scholars of Jixia Academy, the virtuous and the worthless were indistinguishable, as they all spoke only with fine words.

> Outside the Gate of East Sunlight, west of the Imperial Road, The temple buildings were pure and clean, More beautiful than the groves of meditation. Forty thousand cash were donated. The five estates belonged to Li Chong of Chenliu, Minister of the Army Cui Lin, Zhang Lun, and others. They were connected in a winding line. I recall how the ancients valued simplicity and purity, How they worked to cross over with the natural order. Those who understood the joy of the riverside, And the keepers of the archives below, Awakened to Non-Action to illuminate their minds. Such men truly embodied this Way. Their vast capacity shone out beyond the material world. They were not biased toward either the refined or the rustic. They did not advance for fame or profit. Ridge beams rose in front of rocky peaks, Leaning as if to match the height of high clouds. Fine columns stood like ancient forms. Waters gently wound like waves, Stone peaks were uneven and steep, Reaching several dozen feet high, Looking like the legendary Penglai itself. Some rocks leaned, some tumbled. Jade leaves and golden stems Scattered all over the steps and courtyard, Creating a feast for the eyes, Flourishing alongside the spring sunlight. Who could recognize the saints dwelling within? Flocks of birds fluttered in the air, With red feet that came from foreign lands. They waited to see if the birds had lost their way, Truly, a strange and magical sight. Chrysanthemum-covered ridges and plum-covered peaks Welcomed equally spring and autumn, As if participating in the mountainside. They became a field for the wise and the humane. How rich the forests and trees! In spring and summer, people roamed there. This little heart of mine—what does it yearn for?

> Outside the temple gate there was once a life-sized golden statue. In the twelfth month of the third year of the Xiaochang reign, the statue was replaced. If it was washed with silk cloths, it would shed tears. Many scholars and officials in the capital witnessed this. When the Prince of Beihai suffered a great defeat at the hands of Erzhu Rong, this statue again shed tears in grief, morning and evening, filling everyone with dread. Later, the emperor died in Jinyang. The capital's palaces stood empty. The emperor's cousin, who was also his elder brother in the clan, pretended to be mute and would not speak. Soldiers drew their swords and intended to kill him. This prince of the royal family lived for a time at Longhua Temple. Both gods and people now lacked a ruler. Like a chess board, the foundation was being established; the Chancellor waved his command, one decisive move set everything right. He gathered scattered knights. Those who had suffered grievous injuries wept in despair. The throne cannot remain empty for long; the times were beset with many difficulties. So, be mindful of this! His achievements benefited all within the four seas. Yet my own understanding does not see far ahead; I dare not presume to accept. Three times I offered it, and three times I declined, only to encounter the fate of Cheng Ji. I asked my aides where the imperial edict was. I failed to serve as a loyal minister to the end. Jiming was deterred by nothing strong or powerful; no one who witnessed his integrity failed to sigh in admiration. Shilong then spoke bitter words of anger. A man named Shi Wulong and a man named Yang Wenyi submitted a petition to recommend their subordinate, Dou Yuan, for office. The Emperor always said that the Prince of Taiyuan deserved death—his crime was indeed punishable by death. After that, he dared not enter the court again. Wood and earthwork were both finished in their construction. Then they fled to the Chang'an region. (Pingsi Temple)

> This was a small temple at Luoyang, originally called the "Fish and Turtle Temple" by the locals. Later, it moved to Xiaoyi Village. The people there treated the southern visitors very generously. Like frogs and turtles sharing the same burrow, they were beyond the reach of ritual and music—a place where Han Chinese and barbarian languages mixed, and a jumble of the Five Emperors' teachings alongside others. How could those "fish and turtles" truly understand? So, I hurriedly left and returned to Xiao Yan's kingdom. Zhu Yi was surprised and asked me about it. It is like climbing Mount Tai: you start by looking down on the small mounds. Just as a benevolent heart follows its own nature, I didn't offer condolences or congratulations to close friends or family, valuing only friendships made from the heart. In the first year of the Xiaochang era, Yuan Shen returned and told people... In the first year of the Jianyi era, Xu Chao, a native of Jingzhao, set out on a journey of ten thousand miles. Neighbors thought that the Hu brothers were fighting each other. That person then donated his residence to become the Guijue Temple, and the whole family entered the monastic life. The Prince of Guangling was deposed and died.
