> Ningyuan Temple was established by the eunuch Jia Can, who served as the Governor of Ji Prefecture. It is said to stand on the site where the Han Dynasty's Supreme King once resided. Northeast of Luoyang city lies Shanggao Li. There, Li Yuanqian engaged in a playful exchange of words. When asked whose magnificent residence this was, a servant girl responded. During the first year of the Shen'gui era, near the city of Tuyuhun — which the Tuyuhun had conquered — the present city serves as the home of the second son of the Tuyuhun ruler. Within the nation, statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas are revered. If a person falls ill, they are swiftly healed. There are temples and pagodas, with banners inscribed in clerical script reading "the nineteenth year of Taihe." Only one banner remains from the time of the Yao-Qin dynasty. In mourning, people cut their hair and slash their faces to express grief, growing their hair to a length of four inches. A merchant once brought a monk. A monk named Vairocana said, "Now I bring a monk from the Wu region." The king replied, "Let me see the Buddha." He caused the reflection of an overturned vessel to appear, revealing something that was neither skin nor... In the land of Khotan, grains are abundant, and the people eat fermented wheat as food. Their script is the same as that of the Brahmins. Entering the kingdom of Panguo, they arrived at the city of Patra. The king recited a spell over the dragon of the lake and moved it to the Congling Mountains. The long slopes stretch for a thousand miles; compared to this, others are flat. It is measured as intermediate or lower. All rivers flow westward. The people divert the water to irrigate their fields. Upon hearing of China, one said, "How can heaven be reached together?" The weather had grown cold. At the beginning of the tenth month, they entered the country of the Hephthalites, who dwell in felt tents. All came to pay homage. The king spread a large felt rug and used four golden phoenixes as the legs of his bed. He wore a single horn on his head, rounded and hanging down. The territory is very narrow and beset with many difficulties. This kingdom gradually leaves the Congling Mountains behind. One merely hopes for a favorable wind and surrender. The king partakes of a simple diet. He only migrated from the empty mountains. The king said to Song Yun, "An envoy from Great Wei has come." The Dragon King was angry. It was not merely that the seams were visible; even the fine threads were clearly new. Eighty li north of the royal city... If one steps into muddy water... Six thousand golden statues, places where the Tathagata practiced austerities and fed his body to starving tigers. The warm breeze had already risen. Beholding this beautiful scene, one's gaze entered deep concentration. They applied gold leaf to it. A small mountain range separates them. Thus he was proclaimed king. They delight in sacrificing to ghosts and spirits. He holds a sword in his hand. None can hold him accountable. Song Yun replied, "I have come far in search of scriptures. I dare not speak of weariness. There is no slight hardship." Song Yun initially thought the king was a barbarian and could not be reproached with propriety. The ice has varying thicknesses. He said, "When I see the Wei ruler, I will bow. I always sit and read." At that time, the Varvara kingdom... and the king of Gandhara... They again traveled west for three months to reach the Sindhu River. In the twelfth year... They again traveled west for thirteen days. Tracing back to its origin, he and his disciples spread their teachings throughout this land. He said, "Three hundred years after I enter nirvana, a pagoda will be built here." For two hundred years, they had piled cow dung into a pagoda. The king found this boy strange. Only then did he cease. The king began to expand the pagoda's foundation and built upon it with wood. The steps and brackets were constructed. Above, there was an iron pillar, three hundred feet high. The dung pagoda remained as before, three hundred paces south of the great pagoda. A Brahmin, not believing it was dung, dug into it with his hand to check. The pagoda was burned by celestial fire for seven days. No one could climb up to it. Everything inside was about the Buddha. At sunrise, a cover would appear above it. If it were touched, a calamity would occur. Its shape was perfectly round. They raised it to a height of two zhang. It could foretell good or bad fortune for people. If you touched it and it was auspicious... Five hundred brocade scent pouches... The banners of princes and ministers... They copied it in bronze. You had to collect it on a special day. When they reached the kingdom of Nagarahara... There was a time of activity. One person could overcome them. Seeing the Buddha's shadow, they entered a mountain cave fifteen paces. Viewed closely, it was dim and could not be seen. Only then did they see his majestic countenance. Before the cave was a square stone. At the foot of the mountain were six buddhas, thus seven pagodas. South of the pagoda, a stone inscription read...
