> In the seventeenth year of the Taihe era, Emperor Gaozu of the Northern Wei dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang. He ordered Minister of Works Mu Liang to oversee the construction of the imperial palaces. The city gates of Luoyang were named following the conventions of the Wei and Jin dynasties. On the eastern side, there were three gates. The northernmost was named Jianchun Gate, followed by Dongyang Gate to the south, and then Qingyang Gate. On the southern side, there were also three gates. The easternmost was called Kaiyang Gate, followed by Pingchang Gate to the west, and then Xuanyang Gate. On the western side, there were four gates. The southernmost was called Ximing Gate, followed by Xiyang Gate to the north, then Changhe Gate, and then Chengming Gate. On the northern side, there were two gates. The western one was named Daxia Gate, and the eastern one was named Guangmo Gate. Each gate had three passageways, forming what is known as the "nine thoroughfares."
