> Jingming Temple was founded by Emperor Xuanwu. It was built during the Jingming era and named after that period. Located one li outside the Xuan Yang Gate, on the east side of the Imperial Way, during the Zheng'guang era the Empress Dowager constructed a seven-story pagoda here. The temple had three ponds, where rushes, reeds, lotus roots, and aquatic plants grew. At that time, people loved to accumulate merit. On the seventh day of the fourth month, all the parade floats in the capital gathered at this temple. The Ministry of Sacrifices recorded a total of over one thousand floats. On the eighth day, they entered through the Xuan Yang Gate in order, heading toward the Changhe Palace to receive flower offerings from the emperor. Not until the Yongxi era was the National University's Chancellor, Xing Zicai, ordered to compose the temple inscription. Datong Temple is west of Jingming Temple, in what is called Limin Ward. South of the temple was the residence of Gao Xianlüe, a clerk of the three departments. To the east are two temples called Qintai Shanggong, located one li south of Jingming Temple. The western temple was built by the Empress Dowager; the eastern temple was built by the Empress's younger sister. Both were erected to accumulate merit for their fathers and named accordingly. People of the time called them the "Twin Daughters' Temples." The eastern temple housed an observatory. Prince Runan later built a brick pagoda atop the observatory. Baode Temple was founded by Emperor Gaozu Xiaowen to accumulate merit for Empress Dowager Feng. It is located three li outside the Kai Yang Gate. East of the Imperial Way by the Kai Yang Gate lies the former Han Dynasty National University. In front of the university hall stand twenty-five stone classics inscribed in three scripts. Emperor Gaozu named this area Quanxue Ward. Within the ward are three temples: Dajue, Sanbao, and Ningyuan. In the fourth year of the Wuding era, the Grand General relocated the stone classics to Ye. East of Quanxue Ward is Yanxian Ward, which contains Zhengjue Temple, founded by Minister of State Wang Su. Longhua Temple was founded by Prince Guangling; Zhuishing Temple was founded by Prince Beihai. Both are east of Baode Temple. Four li outside the Xuan Yang Gate, a pontoon bridge called Yong Bridge was built across the Luo River. South of Yong Bridge, north of the Round Mound, and between the Yi and Luo Rivers, flanking the Imperial Way, there are four guesthouses for foreign envoys. East of the road: first, Jinling, second, Yanran, third, Fusang, fourth, Yanzi. West of the road: four residence wards: Guizheng, Guide, Muhua, and Muyi. People from Wu who defected to the empire lived in the Jinling Guesthouse; after three years, they were granted residences in Guizheng Ward. Northern barbarians who surrendered lived in the Yanran Guesthouse; after three years, residences were given in Guide Ward. Eastern barbarians who submitted lived in the Fusang Guesthouse, receiving residences in Muhua Ward. Western barbarians who submitted lived in the Yanzi Guesthouse, receiving residences in Muyi Ward. East of the road south of Yong Bridge are two lodges: the White Elephant Lodge and the Lion Lodge. Putisi Temple was established by Western Region merchants, located in Muyi Ward. Gaoyangwang Temple was originally the mansion of Prince Gaoyang, Yuan Yong. It lies three li outside the Jinyang Gate, on the west side of the Imperial Way. Yuan Yong was murdered by Erzhu Rong, after which his mansion was converted into a temple. North of Gaoyang's mansion is Zhonggan Ward. Chongxu Temple is west of the city, originally the Han Dynasty's Yue Long Garden.
