### 第十八代照堂了一禪師

> Eighteenth Generation Abbot Liaoyi

明州人。上堂：「叅玄之士，觸境遇緣，不能直下透脫者，蓋為業識深重，情𡚶膠固，六門未息，一處不通，點絕純清，含生難到。直須入林不動草，入水不動波，始可順生死流，入人間世。諸人要會麽？」以拄杖畫曰：「秪向這裏薦取。」拈首山竹箆示眾曰：「汝諸人，若喚作竹箆則觸，不喚作竹箆則背，汝諸人且道喚作甚麽？速道，速道。」頌曰：

> A monk from Mingzhou. Ascending the hall, he said: "For those who seek the profound truth, when encountering circumstances and meeting conditions, if they cannot directly penetrate through, it is because their habitual tendencies are deep and heavy, their deluded attachments are stubborn and fixed. The six sense gates have not yet ceased, and if one gate is blocked, all are obstructed. To reach the state of utter purity, sentient beings find it difficult to attain. One must enter the forest without stirring the grass, enter the water without stirring the waves—only then can one follow the flow of birth and death and enter the human world. Do you all wish to understand?" He drew a line with his staff and said: "Just recognize it right here." Holding up Shoushan's bamboo staff, he showed it to the assembly and said: "All of you, if you call this a bamboo staff, you are attached; if you do not call it a bamboo staff, you turn away. Tell me, all of you, what should it be called? Speak quickly, speak quickly." A verse says:

竹箆舉起成生殺　豈可容人亂札錐劈脊一揮如薦得　銀山鐵壁也光輝

> The bamboo staff is raised, capable of giving life or death— How can one casually poke at it with an awl? If, with a single strike to the back, you grasp its meaning— Even mountains of silver and walls of iron will shine with brilliance.

三月十九日示寂。

> He passed into Nirvana on the nineteenth day of the third month.
