> Master Zhaozhou, whose family name was Hao, was born in Linzi, Qingzhou—or as some say, in Haoxiang, Caozhou—in the thirteenth year of the Dali era under Emperor Daizong of Tang. Even as a child, he was solitary and aloof, unlike other children. He was ordained as a novice either at Longxing Temple in Qingzhou or at Hudu Yuan in Caozhou, depending on the account. He received the full precepts at the Ordination Platform at Songshan. As a young monk, he went to study under Master Nanquan, who recognized his potential and accepted him as a personal disciple. One day, he asked Nanquan, “What is the Way?” Nanquan replied, “An ordinary mind is the Way.” Zhaozhou asked, “Can we aim for it?” Nanquan said, “If you try to aim for it, you miss it.” Zhaozhou then asked, “Then how do we know it is the Way if we don’t aim for it?” Nanquan explained, “The Way is not about knowing or not knowing. Knowing is delusion; not knowing is blankness. If you truly penetrate the undoubting Way, it is like the vast sky—open and boundless. How can you force right and wrong upon it?” At these words, Zhaozhou instantly awakened to the profound truth, his mind becoming as clear as the bright moon. He then went back to Songshan to receive the full precepts and returned to Nanquan. Later, he traveled to Baoshou, Yanguan, Jiashan, and Wutai, eventually settling at Guanyin Temple in Zhaozhou. At that time, the regional commanders Wang Jingchong and his son Wang Rong had been enfeoffed as princes in Zhao. They were deeply moved by Zhaozhou’s compassionate teachings and became devoted followers, bowing at his feet. His Dharma spread widely, and his teachings were circulated throughout the land, becoming known as the “Zhaozhou style.” In the fourth year of the Qianning era under Emperor Zhaozong of Tang, he passed away lying on his right side at the age of one hundred and twenty. Zhaozhou inherited the Dharma from Nanquan Puyuan, who inherited it from Mazu Daoyi, who inherited it from Nanyue Huairang, who in turn inherited it from Huineng of Caoxi—five generations in total. He was posthumously honored by various masters as “Great Master Zhenji” (True Stillness). In the eleventh year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, he was further honored as “Chan Master Zhenji of Perfect Realization and Direct Pointing.”

> Praise says:

> Zhao Zhou's Stone Bridge— It lets donkeys cross, lets horses cross. This old monk's lifelong path— It never runs out, never ends. Pass through this gate— East and West become one. Bright moon, clear breeze— They cannot match this way.
