> Record of the Finger-Palm Diagram of Cock's Foot Mountain

> Great Master Dacuo

> Since the \*Hetu\* and \*Luoshu\* diagrams emerged together, establishing the foundation of written wisdom, ancient sages always placed diagrams to their left and texts to their right. The principles taught through texts can be shallow, but those shown through diagrams offer a deeper, more intuitive understanding. When I read Liu Xiang's works, I realized that in ancient writings, illustrations made up half of the content. After the Han Dynasty, texts grew more prominent, while the art of illustration faded into obscurity. For landscapes like mountains and rivers, which cannot be fully captured by words alone, what better way is there for readers to grasp their beauty at a glance than through a diagram? Major mountains and rivers are scattered across the human world. Famous peaks like the Five Sacred Mountains and the Ten Great Grotto-Heavens are located in bustling centers of culture and transportation, their lush forests, springs, and valleys naturally renowned for their beauty. But Mount Jizu (Cock's Foot Mountain) is different. Remote in Yunnan, though it is a place where the Buddha once taught, it lies extremely far from the Central Plains and was only later incorporated into the empire's territory. People across the country long to hear of its wonders but regret never seeing them. Even reclusive hermits and spiritual seekers are deterred by the distance and difficult terrain. Few have ever traveled there to explore its hidden depths. The mountain rises 9,400 \*zhang\* from base to summit and spans 400 \*li\* in circumference. Its front features three peaks, and a ridge trails behind, forming the shape of a cock's foot. Within its bounds are over 40 noteworthy hills, 13 peaks, 34 cliffs, 45 caves, and more than 100 streams and springs. The countless ridges, valleys, forests, gorges, and rocks are too numerous to count. Even monks who have long practiced in deep seclusion on the mountain cannot fully explore it all. How then can visiting scholars, who come and go in a few days, ever truly know its wonders, leaving no hidden beauty undiscovered? This is why the \*Guide Map\* was created. The journey begins at the Cangbo Mountain foothills, at the Pick-Flower Temple. After passing the Farewell-Buddha Platform for three \*li\*, follow the mountain path northwest to White-Rock Cliff. Then follow the ridge south for two \*li\* to Gold-Mother Mountain, at whose base lies Snow-Shadow Bridge. West of the bridge is the Hezi Cave. Cross the bridge and walk one \*li\* northwest to the Reception Temple. Behind it, climb the slope to the Nine-Lotus Temple. Pass through Stone-Bell Gorge and Huajin Bridge to reach the Repaying-Kindness Temple, behind which stands Cloud-Stream Nunnery. From Gourd Gorge, cross Stone-Bridge Bridge and arrive at Great-Master Pavilion. Follow Liberation Slope northward to Waterfall-Viewing Pavilion. West across the Jade-Dragon Waterfall, with its thousand-\*chi\* cascade, this is the mountain's most spectacular sight. Climb straight up from here to Muni Nunnery. Turn east and go slightly downhill to Stone-Bell Temple. Before the temple is Alms-Bowl Mountain, and at its base, Alms-Bowl Nunnery. Turn left from the nunnery, cross the stream, and you reach Dragon-Spring Nunnery. Further left are the Five-Flower and No-Self nunneries. Descend the slope from here to the Siddhartha Temple, before which lies the Great Dragon Pool. Go south, cross Fuhu Bridge, and walk east for three \*li\* to Writing-Brush Mountain, home to a pagoda courtyard. Inside is the Venerable-Victory Pagoda, behind which stands Shake-Garment Ridge, offering a thousand-\*ren\* view of the Spirit-Mountain Assembly archway and Earth-Lord Shrine. From Writing-Brush Mountain, turn west and climb north to Gathering-Worthies Mountain, where stands Ancient-Snow Studio. To the left is Cloud-Fragment Lodge, where I collaborated with fellow practitioners on the mountain's history. Walk west from Cloud-Fragment Lodge past Full-Moon Mountain to reach Heaven-Pool Mountain's base, and White-Cloud Lodge. To the right is Vaisravana Hermitage, west lies the Bowl-Dragon Chamber, and ahead is Green-Purity Mountain Villa. Descend south from here, turn east—this is the Break-Off place. From behind, turn further west to reach the Perfect-Purity and Dharma-Realm nunneries. Cross Leaning-Staff Stream and Carefree Bridge to reach the Great-Vehicle, Great-Master, Great-Wisdom, Pure-Awakening, Ultimate-Bliss, and Jewel-Lotus nunneries. Beyond these are Fantasy-Dwelling Nunnery and ananda Monastery. A bit further ahead is Complete-Penetration Temple, and to the right is Western-Heaven Temple. Turn north to Dragon-Flower Temple and Qingyun Nunnery. West lies Long-Life Nunnery. Continue northwest to Great-Awakening Temple, which directly faces the Rest-Shadow Pavilion. Turn right, cross the stream, and reach Thousand-Buddha Temple and Guanyin Temple, along with Dharma-Flower and Spirit-Source nunneries. Climb the slope past Echo-Snow Bridge to Tranquil-Light Temple. Turn west to Water-Moon Nunnery and Merit-Accumulation Nunnery. Further west lies the First-Transmission Temple. Cross Nine-Stream Bridge to reach Lamp-Lighting Temple. Turn northwest uphill and you'll arrive at Bright-Song Glade and Victory-Peak Temple. To the left of the temple, across a gorge, stand White-Cloud Temple and the Complement-Everything Nunnery. A short way up, past Wisdom-Lamp Nunnery, left lies Maitreya Cloister. Climb another three \*li\* to Kashyapa Hall. To its left are Arhat Walls, and there is Yang-Fu Cave, the cultivation site of the Perfected One Yang. East lie the Western-Arrival and Blue-Cloud temples, and 49 hermitages. Pass through the Luo-Li Masters Archway to reach the Esteem-the-High Pavilion. Climb further to Perfected-Warrior Cave, beside which lies Perfected-Warrior Pavilion. Continue up to the Succor-Sky Nunnery. Two \*li\* on, you arrive at the Bronze-Tile Hall. To the left is the Kashaya Stone. Behind the hall, climb the Monkey Ladder to the Great-Compassion Pavilion. Pass through the Three-Heavenly-Gates to reach the summit of Four-Views Peak. On the summit stands a fortified city. Inside the city is a Gold Hall, behind which lies a Buddha Hall. Farthest back is the Heaven-One Pavilion. From the peak, gaze west at the Snowy Mountains, sparkling white like silver. Look west to view Mount Cangshan, which appears incredibly close. Peer down at Lake Erhai, which seems like a mere ribbon of water. Two \*li\* northwest of the peak stands the Great-View Pavilion. Descend to Manjushri Cliff, where the old site of Manjushri Hall remains. West lies the Body-Forgetting Cliff. Further west is the Self-Restraining Gorge, home to the Immortal-Chess Rock and Tiger-Leap Gorge. Cross this to reach the Buddha-Platform. Further west at Penetration-Mystery Cave and the Sublime-High Terrace. Turn east, walk one \*li\* to reach Caoqi Stream, then two \*li\* more to the Eight-Auspicious-Waters. From here, two \*li\* southeast leads to Flower-Head Gate. Before the gate stand twin pagodas, and beside it is the Golden-Chicken Spring. From here, descend back via the Bronze-Tile Hall to Kashyapa Hall and Victory-Peak Temple. From Victory-Peak, head straight south to Prosperous-Auspicious Temple, and the nunneries of Wonderful-Awakening, Wisdom-Spirit, Heavenly-India, No-Abode, and Soaring-Cloud, as well as the Dharma-Brilliance and Blessing-the-Nation temples. Reach Cloud-Sea Nunnery and Vairochana Pavilion, then proceed to Flower-Garland Temple and Ten-Thousand-Pines Nunnery, finally arriving at Transmission-Robe Temple. To its left stand Bodhi-Place and Thunder-Sound temples, and the Prajna, Pure-Clouds, Complete-Penetration, Amitabha, and Udumbara nunneries. A bit left in the bamboo grove also lie Compassion-Cloud and Opening-Transformation nunneries. From Victory-Peak, turn east to Eaglewood Grove and Lion Grove. Eaglewood Grove has 14 hermitages, Lion Grove has 42—these are the most excellent places for Daoist cultivation. Further east lies Nine-Layered Cliff, with another 15 hermitages. From Victory-Peak Temple, go west and then turn for seven \*li\* to Radiance-Emission Temple. Further west, cross Udumbara Bamboo Grove for five \*li\* to reach Gold-Flower Nunnery. Another five \*li\* brings you to Great-Sage Temple. One more \*li\* to Dragon-Soaring and Wide-Grace temples. Fifteen \*li\* further west lies Remembering-Kindness Temple. Behind the mountain are the Flower-Store Cave and Small Stone Cave, the Upper and Lower Stone Pools, and Kind-Sage Temple. In summary, this mountain commands the beauty of three prefectures, with peaks competing in splendor across several counties. It contains eight major temples, 34 smaller temples, 65 nunneries, and over 170 hermitages. Its hidden caves, perilous cliffs, fantastic peaks, strange rocks, winding gorges, and pure springs are beyond naming or counting. If this mountain were located in a bustling metropolis, in the prosperous regions of Jiangnan, every hill and valley would have been praised by countless poets and celebrities. But because it lies so remote in the southwest, on the borderlands, very few literary individuals pass through, and so it remains obscure. During my half-year stay compiling the mountain's history, I climbed dangerous heights with fellow practitioners Yanzang, Xiantuo, Bamao, Zhongye, and Deyin, cutting paths through the wilderness to explore caves. Even where no woodcutter or shepherd could go, where even monkeys would retreat, we thoroughly investigated and recorded the sights in writing. From this work, the scenic wonders of Mount Jizu have almost no secrets left. Although the Four Garrisons and Five Sacred Mountains gain fame through their imperial titles, and blessed lands and grotto-heavens reveal themselves through written accounts, Mount Jizu alone has been ignored because of its wild remoteness. Is this the mountain's fault? Now that the \*Guide Map\* is complete, scholars everywhere can rely on it to "travel while lying down." Mount Jizu can now emerge and compete with the world's great mountains and rivers for eternal fame. The meeting between a mountain and its admirers always has its karmic cause. When conditions align, the immortal islands of Fanghu, Yuanqiao, and Daiyu, though separated by 300,000 \*li\* of Weak Water, can be reached in a flying chariot. But when conditions are not aligned, even the nearer islands of Penglai, Yingzhou, and Fangzhang, though directly opposite Kuaiji, can never be reached, even by driving stones to fill the sea. With the completion of this map, I have appended this record for future gentlemen who may wish to look upon it.
