The *Lin'an Gazetteer* states: "The Jingxing Xingsheng Wanshou Chan Monastery is located thirty li north of Lin'an County, on the northeast mountain of Tianmu." Its founder was "National Teacher of the First Rank, Dharma Master Qin." During the reign of Emperor Daizong of the Tang dynasty, an imperial edict ordered Hangzhou to establish Jing Mountain Monastery at his hermitage. In the sixth year of the Qianfu era, it was renamed the Qianfu Zhenguo Monastery. During the Dazhong Xiangfu era, it was renamed the Chengtian Chan Monastery. In the seventh year of the Zhenghe era, (The *County Gazetteer* states: "The first year of the Kaixi era.") it was renamed the Nengren Chan Monastery.
When Master Qin first arrived at this mountain, fierce beasts did not attack, birds of prey did not strike, and the people at the foot of the mountain ceased fishing and hunting. There were two white hares that would bow and kneel before his staff and sandals. A spiritual rooster often followed the Dharma assemblies, refusing to eat living creatures. When the master went to Chang'an, the rooster crowed for three days and then died. Its burial mound remains to this day.
Emperor Xiaozong of the Song dynasty inscribed a plaque for the monastery. It had a "Thousand Monks Pavilion" and a "Marvelous Joy Hermitage." Empress Xianren and Emperor Gaozong once visited Jing Mountain, bestowing generous gifts. In the fourth year of the Qiandao era, the "Dragon Roaming Pavilion" was built.
Emperor Daizong of the Tang dynasty issued an edict to National Teacher of the First Rank, Great Awakening Chan Master of Jing Mountain: "We have heard that in Jiangzuo there is a Chan practitioner who embodies the Way, whose virtuous nature is pure as ice and frost, whose conduct is pristine amidst forests and wilderness. With a sincere heart, We gaze from afar, yearning and longing. Where there is sincerity, there is response; this is also a great blessing for the state. We beseech the Master to condescend to come to the central plains, to satisfy Our devotion. Do not turn away from the power of this vow; manifest in response to beings. We now dispatch the palace attendant Huang Feng to proclaim Our decree, specially conveying this summons to welcome you. Quickly comply with Our heart's desire. With the warmth of spring, is the Master well? We convey this and no more. By decree, the local prefecture and county shall provide escort. Wherever you arrive in the prefectures and counties, open pure quarters for your安置. Officials are not permitted to request audiences, lest they weary the Master's mind and energy. Disciples, regardless of number, are permitted to accompany as attendants." By decree.
