Kaiyuan Temple Gazetteer of Quanzhou

The meditation hall stands to the right of the main hall. It was built by Miaoen, founder of the monastery, during the Zhiyuan era. It was destroyed in the final years of the Yuan dynasty and rebuilt by the monk Zhengying. In the gengyin year of the Yongle era, the monk Zhichang restored it and gave it the name "Lotus Garden Enlightenment Place." By the thirty-seventh year of the Jiajing era, the Shuilu Temple had been seized by powerful local families. The monks had nowhere to live, so this hall was allocated to the Shuilu monks. Their quarters still exist today.
