> Flower Adornment Sutra of the Venerable Tianyi

> The magnificent realm of Avatamsaka wisdom—layer upon layer, endless and infinite, beyond measure. Countless fragrant seas, the entire Flower Treasury world contained within a single strand of hair. The Buddha's body is vast, bodhisattvas without number, their spiritual powers unfathomable, their wisdom inexhaustible. All of this is gathered up by the venerable elder in the heavenly robe, as the ink-light radiates from the tip of his brush, capturing everything completely without remainder. From beginning to end, from start to finish, from inner to outer—each stroke of the brush traverses the Flower Treasury world, each dot of ink reveals the Buddha's merit. Stars of meaning shine brightly across the open sky, oceans of text spread boundlessly through the mind. A quiet window and clean table are no different from the realm of still extinction; a small room and simple bed are not separate from the wonderful hall of Dharma. Holding the brush and tasting the ink—this itself is the broad and long tongue of teaching. Unfurling paper and rolling out scrolls—none of this is not light radiating and earth trembling. The wind moves, clouds drift—illuminating the great principle of the Six Marks. Birds sing, flowers fall—revealing the profound gate of the Ten Mysteries. The realm of principle, the realm of phenomena, even the realm of phenomena interpenetrating with phenomena—apart from this, where else can one return to the source? Principle without obstruction, phenomena without obstruction, extending to the mutual non-obstruction of phenomena and phenomena—apart from this, what more can be said? Directly, the great appears within the small, the small within the great. One becomes countless, countless becomes one. At the tip of a single hair, the palace of the Jeweled King appears. Sitting within a speck of dust, the great Dharma wheel turns. At every moment, one meets Vairocana face to face. In every thought, Samantabhadra walks arm in arm. This can be called one's own accomplishment—the wisdom body arises not from another's awakening. One only needs to trust fully and see through completely, then become the eldest child of the Buddha and a bridge for the world. Even so, even reaching such a state, this is still within the bounds of the Dharma realm. To go beyond the edge of the Dharma realm, one must seek the ancestral gate and find a different kind of staff to be struck with.
