> Male is father, female is mother; yet father is simply male, and mother is simply female. When Kun embodies Qian, it gives rise to the three sons: Zhen represents wisdom within stillness—that is, resting and then contemplating. Zhen signifies penetrating observation, Gen signifies thorough insight, and Kan signifies observation without deliberate observing. When Qian embodies Kun, it gives rise to the three daughters: Xun represents stillness within wisdom—that is, contemplating and then resting. Xun signifies calming cessation, Dui signifies halting stillness, and Li signifies stillness without deliberate stopping. Zhen moves, Gen is still, and Kan can both move and be still—so Qian is not exclusively dynamic. Xun moves, Dui is still, and Li can both move and be still—so Kun is not exclusively static. Furthermore, Zhen moves and emerges, Xun moves and enters, Gen is still and lofty, Dui is still and deep. Kan encompasses both movement and stillness, descending from above without ever exhausting the upper; Li encompasses both movement and stillness, ascending from below without ever exhausting the lower. Thus we truly know that each and every phenomenon is the Dharma Realm itself.
