### 闢邪集跋語

余嘗讀《觀所緣緣論》，先展轉縱奪以破外人，然後中立正義。倘外計未破，不應先主自宗。譬以良將用兵，先以威伏，後以慈撫也。近日天主之教淺陋，殆不呈言。彼翕然信向者，達士不過為利所惑，庸人不過望風超影，皆無足怪。獨惜夫破之者，不能借矛攻盾，往往先自立宗，反未免齎盜糧而藉寇兵耳。惟茲二《徵》，絕不自軌一法，惟乘其釁而攻之，大似尉遲、敬德，裸身赤手入陣而奪矛取勝。其以臨濟白拈賊之心裏者耶？乞集一出可以破邪，可以匡世，可以閑聖道，可以獲　國運，利亦偉矣。爰不揣庸劣，評而梓之。

> I once read the \*Treatise on the Object of Cognition\*, in which the author first refutes the views of others through a rigorous back-and-forth debate, and only then establishes his own correct position. If the theories of others are not first dismantled, one’s own doctrine should not be presented prematurely. This is like a skilled general leading an army: first he subdues with force, then soothes with kindness. Recently, the teachings of Catholicism have been shallow and crude—so much so that they are not even worth mentioning. Yet there are those who eagerly follow and believe in them. This is nothing surprising: those of high status are merely seduced by personal gain, while ordinary people simply follow the crowd without understanding. What is truly regrettable is that those who set out to refute these teachings often fail to use the opponent’s own weapons against them. Instead, they prematurely establish their own position, inadvertently supplying the enemy with ammunition and handing weapons to the invader. These two \*Treatises\*, however, do not cling to any fixed doctrine. They simply seize upon the opponent’s weak points and attack, much like the generals Yuchi Jingde and Yuchi Gong, who would plunge into battle unarmored and unarmed, snatching the enemy’s spear to win victory. Could this not be the very heart of Linji’s “White-Robed Thief” approach? I humbly believe that publishing these texts can defeat heresy, correct worldly views, safeguard the sacred path, and benefit the fortunes of our nation. Thus, setting aside my own inadequacies, I have written this preface in evaluation.
