> Monastic Calculation Methods

> It further states: "According to the calculation method of the Yellow Emperor in this land, there are twenty-three numbers in total: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred million, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion, septillion, octillion, nonillion, decillion, and undecillion. Beyond ten thousand, there are three counting methods: the lower one changes by tens, the middle one changes by hundreds, and the higher one changes by doubling. Now, in the 'Asaṃkhyeya Chapter' of the Flower Garland Sutra, the middle and higher counting methods are used. The first number states that one hundred lakhs (with a note: 'lakh' here means ten thousand) make one koti (with a note: 'this means a hundred million'), koti koti make one ayuta (with a note: 'this means a trillion'), ayuta ayuta make one nayuta (with a note: 'this means a quadrillion'), and so on, up to the inexpressible, totaling one hundred and twenty large numbers—these are not the calculations of the mundane world." (From the fourth volume of the Bian character section, lower part.)

> The \*Wisdom Treatise\* says: "Asaṃkhya: 'A' means 'without'; 'saṃkhya' means 'number.' Hence it is called 'countless.'" <note place="inline">Volume 1 of the Character Function Collection</note>
