### 示了際禪人

余中興曹溪，重修寶林禪堂以接納四來。時，量禪人發願行乞以供大眾。當結制之初，禪人拈香請益，予因示之曰：「諸佛利生妙行原非一種；菩薩成佛妙門本非一路。故曰：『歸源性無二，方便有多門。』昔維摩大士以一缽飯而為佛事，三萬二千有量之眾食其食者皆入律行，且道至今缽盂仍舊香飯如常，食之者律行何居？持來者神通何在？若於此透得，正所謂於食等者於法亦等；若透不得，更須參訪知識決擇疑情，直至不疑之地，始與本地少分相應。其或未然，未免隨波逐浪。所以僧參趙州，乃云：『學人乍入叢林，乞師指示！』趙云：『喫粥也未？』僧云：『喫也。』趙云：『洗缽盂去。』其僧有省。禪人若於趙州說處、這僧省處會得，便與維摩方丈中諸上善人把臂共行去也。」

> I was once appointed to revitalize the Caoxi monastery and rebuilt the Baolin meditation hall to welcome practitioners from all directions. At that time, a meditator named Liang made a vow to go on alms rounds to support the community. When the summer retreat began, this meditator offered incense and asked for guidance. I then instructed him: "The wondrous practices that enlightened beings use to benefit living beings are not limited to a single form; the sublime paths by which bodhisattvas attain Buddhahood are not confined to one way. Thus it is said: 'The source of returning to one's true nature is the same, but there are many skillful means to reach it.' In the past, the great being Vimalakirti performed a buddha-work with just one bowl of rice. Thirty-two thousand beings, however many there were, who ate of that food all entered into harmonious conduct. But let me ask: to this day, the bowl remains and the fragrant rice is as it always was—for those who eat it, where does their harmonious conduct abide? For those who brought it, where does their spiritual power reside? If you can penetrate this, then it is truly said: 'One who is equal regarding food is also equal regarding the Dharma.' If you cannot penetrate it, you must further visit wise teachers and resolve your doubts, pressing on until you reach the ground where no doubt remains. Only then will you have a small measure of accord with your original nature. If you fail to do so, you will inevitably drift with the waves. This is why a monk once asked Master Zhaozhou: 'I have just entered the monastery—please give me some guidance!' Zhaozhou said: 'Have you eaten your gruel yet?' The monk said: 'Yes, I have.' Zhaozhou said: 'Then go wash your bowl.' At that, the monk had an awakening. If you, Liang, can understand what Zhaozhou said and where that monk awakened, then you will walk side by side with all the noble beings in Vimalakirti's room."
