### 示小師大義

爾自從老人遊，迄今二十餘年，不獨執事辛勤，即罹患難、走瘴鄉已三度矣！前已遣爾歸家山事師長，爾狂心不歇復為余來。今聞爾師已作故物，爾竟不能生執巾瓶、死啟手足，是可以稱弟子乎？爾今即歸，不思何以報師恩於冥冥乎？古人參師訪友，端為成辦道業，爾今從師二十餘年，道業何在？古人羞見父母師友，爾道業無成，幸爾無父母師友，無寄羞地矣！祖師云：「眾生與佛無別，但眾生多習氣，佛祖清淨無垢耳！」爾事善知識，親聞訓誨，年亦老矣！尚然悠悠如此，竟不知此去他時後日又何面目見老僧乎？萬一老僧如爾父母，恐爾此生亦無寄羞地也。念爾忠肝義膽不減古人，昨讀達觀師語，以田光比爾，如此則老僧何以報平生乎？所謂：「諸供養中，以法為最。」今別復以此作供養以酬生平，爾其再無忘今日重別之言。臨岐執手，叮嚀珍重！

> You have followed me for over twenty years now. During this time, you have not only worked diligently but have also endured hardships, traveling through malarial regions three times for my sake. Earlier, I sent you back to your homeland to care for your teacher and elders, but your restless heart would not settle, and you returned to me. Now I hear that your teacher has passed away, and you were unable to be by their side—neither to hold the water pitcher in life nor to close their hands in death. Can you truly call yourself a disciple? Now that you are returning home, have you thought about how you might repay your teacher's kindness in the unseen realm? The ancients sought out teachers and friends precisely to accomplish the path of practice. You have been with your teacher for over twenty years—where is your realization of the path? The ancients felt shame before their parents, teachers, and friends. Your practice has borne no fruit; fortunately, you have no parents, teachers, or friends to face, so you have no place to hang your shame. The Ancestral Master said: "Sentient beings and Buddhas are not different, but sentient beings are full of habitual tendencies, while Buddhas are pure and without defilement." You have served a wise teacher and heard their direct instructions face to face. You are growing old as well, yet you remain so heedless! I wonder how you will ever face me again in the future. If I were to pass away like your parents, I fear you would have no place to lay down your shame in this lifetime either. Yet I recall that your loyalty and righteous courage are no less than that of the ancients. Yesterday I read Master Daguan's words, comparing you to Tian Guang. If that is so, how can I ever repay you for all you have done in this life? As it is said: "Among all offerings, the offering of Dharma is the highest." Now, at our parting, I offer this teaching to you as a repayment for your lifelong devotion. Do not forget the words I speak at this heavy farewell. At the crossroads of parting, I hold your hand and bid you take care.
