> For Liu Zhong'an

> I once lived in Wuyang, where many came to study with me. Among them was a young man named Liu—strong in spirit, straightforward in character, with an old-soul appearance and a clear, penetrating gaze. I sensed that he carried the seeds of prajna wisdom from past lives, and that his disposition was close to the Way. But at the time, he merely followed along with the others, showing nothing that set him apart. Soon, I was about to set out for Mount Nanyue, and I encouraged all my students to take the Way as their life's mission. Liu came to see me off on the boat, and earnestly asked for guidance: "Master, my resolve to walk the Way is extremely strong, but I am bound by deep-rooted habits and tangled in wandering thoughts. I cannot break through to the highest realization. I beg you, please show me the way." The old man replied: "If you are aware that your thoughts are wandering, then those wandering thoughts can no longer bind you. Since they are called 'wandering thoughts,' they have no true substance—like flowers appearing in the sky, how could they bear fruit? Your problem is that you do not realize that wandering thoughts have no true existence. You mistake them for something real, treat them as an adversary, and battle with them moment after moment, never giving yourself a single instant of rest. In doing so, you make those wandering thoughts your master, and your true nature gets buried underneath. This is why the path seems so difficult for you. "Do you not recall how a monk once asked an ancient master: 'What should I do when wandering thoughts will not stop?' The master replied: 'Wandering thoughts are not evil.' "Our original nature is utterly clear and luminous, completely empty of any separate thing. But with a single moment of unawareness, the whole of it transforms into wandering thoughts. If you can directly shine the light of awareness right where a wandering thought arises, in that very instant it dissolves back into the vast treasury of luminous wisdom. How could it possibly continue to bind you? All this happens because you do not realize that fundamentally there is nothing there. "This is why the Sixth Patriarch, while studying under Huangmei, was able to say just one line—'Originally there is not a single thing'—and thereby receive the robe and bowl, going south to carry on the teaching. "From today onward, when you practice, take this single phrase—'Originally nothing exists'—as your meditation topic. Throughout the day and night, keep investigating it with unwavering focus. Simply watch wherever wandering thoughts arise, and do not chase after them. Meet them with a single, sharp confrontation, and they will naturally vanish without a trace. "If you slacken, grow lazy, or limit yourself by giving up, that is your own failing—not a difficulty inherent in the Way. Take care not to abandon yourself. Strive on!"
