> Guidance for Practitioners

> Elder Zibai devoted himself wholeheartedly to the great Dharma, aspiring to restore the prosperity of the Buddhist community. For this reason, he undertook the monumental task of carving the Buddhist canon in the bound-volume format. This was no small undertaking—a truly momentous event. Yet finding the right person to carry it forward proved challenging time and again. In the end, the entire burden was placed upon the shoulders of Venerable Dan, who accepted it with extraordinary strength—again, no small feat. Once the canon was carved, it still needed to be stored properly, and establishing this place of refuge was yet another great achievement. Nor was this accomplished by a single pair of hands—many labored tirelessly, braving cold and rain, day and night without rest. This much is widely known. Among them, the attendant Jie stood out, always stepping forward with courage, taking on every task without flinching from hardship or danger. His contributions were the greatest, and his unwavering loyalty and dedication made him exceptional even among the most devoted. I have often observed that people rarely exert themselves without some underlying motive—even the great heroes of antiquity were no exception, much less ordinary folk. Recall how Emperor Gaozu of Han, after unifying the realm, had yet to reward his meritorious ministers. He noticed groups whispering together in the sand and asked Master Zifang about it. Zifang replied: "These are men who braved arrows and stones through countless battles, who passed through a thousand deaths to cling to life. They all hope for some land and title in return. Seeing no rewards yet, they speak among themselves." Thereupon, the emperor promptly conferred rewards upon them. Such was the ancient principle of recognizing service. Now consider the attendant Jie: at the outset, his sole intention was to leave the home life—nothing more. But now, after seven years of devoted service, this sanctuary is established, and the great Dharma has found its proper home. Among those who have labored, could there not be some who whisper among themselves, wondering about their due recognition? Elder Zibai declares: "Now is the time to bestow the reward of the Thus-Come One upon him." The attendant Jie has received this supreme blessing—the Buddha's own reward. Yet remember: if one cannot uphold the Dharma, honor the Buddha's teachings, and carry out the Buddha's work—should one, heaven forbid, break the precepts or corrupt the Dharma—the Thus-Come One also wields his own sword of justice. Do not take this matter lightly, nor treat it with negligence, thinking that what was gained came easily. Be vigilant!
