歷觀古之豪傑涉艱難困苦，操長遠不退之志者概不多見，其人若晉五臣，從重耳亡在外，十九年無怠心者，蓋亦日夜望咫尺之封且垂不朽于竹帛耳！此乃名利牽心故忘身從事，此古今世人之常情也。若田道人者，從達大師二十餘年，寢食俱廢，競競一念未嘗少怠，小有過差痛責重杖，居常兩腿如墨，竟不起一怨心出一怨言，以至犯大難願以死從事，在寂寞苦空門中竟何所圖，乃能精進堅強不拔如此哉？由是觀之，較古忠臣義士所絕少者，今於道人見之矣！王太史談之甚悉，余曾目擊其人與行事，不謂能徹底也。及死得從葬大師於雙徑，余謂此一坯土不但俗人，即僧徒亦不易得，是於法國土中已得茅土之封也，非亡身血戰何以有此臨終？以此卷付其徒朱道人，今澹公為名曰海耕，亦法門功臣世業之券也，豈小緣哉？

> Looking through history, heroes who endured hardship and adversity while maintaining unwavering resolve are rare indeed. Men like the five ministers of Jin who followed Chong'er into exile, never slackening for nineteen years—they were driven by dreams of fiefdoms and lasting fame in the annals of history! This is because ambition for honor and profit gripped their hearts, leading them to forget themselves in service—such is the common way of the world, then and now. But consider Daoist Tian. He followed Master Da for over twenty years, neglecting sleep and food, his single-minded focus never once wavering. For the slightest mistake, he endured severe punishment with heavy blows. His legs were perpetually black and blue, yet never did a single resentful thought arise, nor a single complaint escape his lips. He even faced great dangers willingly, vowing to serve unto death. In the lonely, austere path of ascetic practice, what exactly was he seeking? How could he remain so diligent, steadfast, and unshakable? From this we see that what even loyal ministers and righteous warriors of old rarely achieved, we now witness in this Daoist! Grand Secretary Wang spoke of him in great detail, and I myself witnessed his conduct firsthand—I never imagined he would go so far. When he passed away and was granted burial beside the Master at Shuangjing, I remarked that this plot of earth was not easily obtained—not even by ordinary monks, let alone laypeople. In the kingdom of Dharma, he had already received his own enfeoffment of land. Without risking his life in spiritual battle, how could he have attained such honor at life's end? This scroll is now entrusted to his disciple, Daoist Zhu, whom Master Dan has named "Hai Geng" (Sea Plowing)—a testament to his meritorious service in the Dharma gate, a charter of inheritance for future generations. How could this be a small karmic connection?
