### 示劉道人

> A Teaching for Practitioner Liu

汝為生死出家，獨坐孤峰頂上，十年於此何等真切；聞被魔害數十次其心不動，何等忍力；聞眾皆勸往他處避之，畢竟不去，何等定見？此必於本分事上大有得力處。既能一念如此，當視四大如空華水月，視死生如夢幻，若果得解脫便坐脫立亡去。如其不能，就當一念不動，任他刀割香塗節節肢解，畢竟不動一念，方是正見正行。今聞欲絕粒而死，此是魔所攝持，即當看破。此念決不可如此認著，不唯可惜自己為生死苦心，抑恐令他入邪見網也。幸即安心改圖，切不可如此亂作。

> You left the household life for the sake of birth and death, sitting alone on a solitary peak for ten years—how sincere and earnest that is! Hearing that you have been attacked by demons dozens of times without your mind being shaken—what forbearance and strength! Hearing that many urged you to move elsewhere to avoid them, yet you ultimately refused—what firm conviction! This must mean you have gained great strength in your fundamental matter. Since you can maintain such a single-minded state, you should view the four elements as empty flowers and water moons, and see birth and death as illusions and dreams. If you have truly attained liberation, then you can sit and pass away, or stand and depart. But if you cannot, then you should remain unwavering in a single thought, letting blades cut or incense burn, letting limbs be severed joint by joint—still not moving a single thought. Only then is this right view and right conduct. Now I hear you intend to fast unto death—this is a demon's grip, and you must see through it immediately. Never cling to this thought. Not only would it waste the bitter effort you have made for birth and death, but I fear it would also lead others into the net of wrong views. I urge you to calm your mind and change course. Do not act so rashly.
