> Instructions for Lay Practitioner Shen of Wujiang

> All beings cling to self as the root of birth and death, because where there is a self, there is the world of things. When things stand opposed to the self, conflict arises. When the self invites conflict, all forms of resistance follow, and once resistance sets in, it clouds and confuses us. Thus the eye is beguiled by forms, the ear by sounds, the nose by scents, the tongue by flavors, the body by touch, and the mind by thoughts. Confusion breeds agitation; agitation breeds disorder; disorder leads to the loss of one's inner balance. Once that balance is lost, the harm done is great indeed. People today are all beguiled without realizing it, wounded without feeling the pain—such is the depth of their folly. What is more, they take these very things to be beneficial to themselves, clinging to them, grasping at them—this is folly upon folly. Only the wise understand that these things bring no real benefit, and so they keep their distance. Yet keeping one's distance is not as good as letting go of the self altogether. If one can truly let go of the self, then all these opposing forces become like countless arrows shot into empty space—there is nothing for them to strike. You who aspire to the Way: begin here.
