> Shijia Temple's Lengyan Hall Master

> The sutra says: "The seed of Buddhahood arises from conditions." It also says: "If you wish to understand the nature of Buddha, observe the causes and conditions of the time." From this we know that the Dharma realm is founded on dependent origination. Looking closely at both the worldly and transcendental realms, there is not a single phenomenon that does not arise from causes and conditions. Lengyan Temple was founded during the Tang Dynasty, and it has a long history since the great master Changshui wrote his commentary on the Shurangama Sutra here. Located in the bustling heart of the city, it was once encroached upon by those in power. The monks, being gentle by nature, could not defend it, and the work of restoration was indeed difficult. Fortunately, a man named Lu from Wutai was born in this region. Having received the entrustment of the spiritual mountain, he took the protection of the Dharma as his mission. At the same time, the enlightened master Daguan appeared on the scene and shared a deep karmic connection with him. Upon meeting, they instantly understood each other and discussed restoring the temple—but finding someone to carry this heavy responsibility was no easy task. Just then, Master Mikai, a scholar who had left lay life to become a monk, became Daguan's foremost disciple. Possessing remarkable organizational skills, he took on the entire responsibility of restoring Lengyan Temple when the plan was proposed. A meditation hall was established to welcome practitioners from all directions, and the initiative to print the Fangce Great Canon was launched to spread the Dharma widely—all of this began here. After the canon printing project was underway, the emperor graciously bestowed a set of the Great Canon to honor the temple, though the main hall had not yet been completed. Unfortunately, Master Mikai withdrew from the project before completing it, and Master Lu of Wutai passed away. What hope remained? Unexpectedly, Prefect Cai Huaiting arrived and suddenly revived the endeavor. With the lay practitioner Bao Xinxian as leader, they resolutely undertook the great construction. In no time, people rallied together like an echo responding to a call, and within a year, the magnificent hall rose tall with golden statues gleaming brilliantly—how majestic! Considering that nearly twenty years had passed since the restoration was first discussed, with Mikai gone and Daguan departed, the momentum seemed to have died out. Yet with the mere arrival of Prefect Cai, everything was suddenly renewed. Is this not the working of causes and conditions? Indeed, there are inconceivable aspects to such events! I shared a deep spiritual bond with Master Daguan, and anything established for the Dharma was of intimate concern to me. When I heard that Lengyan Temple had been restored, the wise ones had passed on, and it was difficult to find those who could safeguard it. When I came to Shuangjing to conduct Daguan's cremation rites, I passed by Lengyan Temple and saw its grand scale—truly a pure land in the midst of the mundane world. Its meditation hall was exquisite and spotless, a true palace of the Dharma amid the illusions of this world. Meeting Abbot Lin, I found him dignified and refined, patient, compassionate, and harmonious—a true leader of the monastic community. I have often lamented that in this impure world of the Five Turbidities, even Bodhisattvas whom the Buddha personally entrusted dared not venture into this realm to benefit beings—how much less ordinary people? Because of Lin's dignity and refinement, all who see him feel respect; because of his compassion and patience, all who follow him feel joy. With hearts of respect and joy, the unfinished work can be accomplished. It is like sailing with the wind on calm waters—how difficult can reaching the other shore be? As for his aspiration to build a Buddhist pavilion and a mountain gate, that will be accomplished with the ease of a snap of the fingers! I thought the lion's roar of the Dharma was about to fall silent, but fortunately, there is someone like him to carry it forward—this too is a matter of karmic conditions. What matters is that he remains firm and unwavering in his resolve, safeguarding this hard-won and easily lost place of practice, and devoting himself to the eternal work of the Buddha. The flourishing of the great Dharma will be the radiance of his own mind shining forth. Why, then, would he not strengthen his mortal body, which is so treasured by the Three Jewels?
