### 示沙彌性鎧

> Shami Xingkai

沙彌性鎧來參請益，老人字之曰堅忍，惟佛示弟子曰：「著忍辱衣，名堅固鎧。」以鎧為禦患之具，譬夫大將臨敵，不遭矢石之患而能全身保命、有必勝之功者，鎧之力也。且吾沙門釋子蹈生死之場，遇五慾諸魔之大敵，非忍力堅固不足以勝之，故曰：「忍色忍欲。」難忍能忍，方能保全法身慧命以臻極樂之場。即吾佛亦曰：「種種諸難，皆當能忍。」況末法險道多諸患難，苟無堅忍之力又何以克全出世之業乎？

> The novice monk Xing Kai came to pay his respects and seek guidance. The elder gave him the Buddhist name "Jian Ren" (Firm Endurance), saying: The Buddha taught his disciples, "Wear the armor of patience, known as the armor of steadfastness." Armor is a tool for warding off harm—just as a great general facing the enemy is protected from arrows and stones, able to preserve his life and secure certain victory through the power of his armor. Likewise, we who follow the Buddha's path walk through the battlefield of birth and death, confronting the mighty foes of the five desires and all temptations. Without firm endurance, we cannot overcome them. Thus it is said: "Endure the temptations of form, endure the temptations of desire." Only by enduring what is difficult to endure can we safeguard our spiritual life and wisdom, reaching the blissful realm of ultimate peace. Even the Buddha himself said, "All kinds of hardships should be endured." How much more so on the treacherous path of these latter days, filled with many perils—without the power of firm endurance, how could one accomplish the great task of transcending the world?
