### 示夜台禪人

> Night Terrace Zen Practitioner

文殊菩薩住清涼山，與一萬眷屬常演說法，故西域沙門遙禮此山為金色世界。《華嚴經》云：「一切處文殊師利，從一切處金色世界而來。」由是觀之，文殊果常住於此山耶？蓋眾生界中煩惱所集為熱惱地，若行人能開智眼，達本情忘知心體合，則當下清涼，如是則觸目無非文殊化境，步步不離清涼道場，此所謂一切處文殊金色世界也。夜台禪人久住台山夜遊，故得此名，今來南方行腳參禮知識，是必親從文殊指點而來。如善財之南詢，雖經百一十城未動腳跟一步；如前周行十方世界，未離金色界中，在在知識逆順法門，無非文殊智眼。今見老人於五乳峰頭，與金色世界是同是別？這裏辯得，許你親見文殊；其或未然，再買艸鞋行腳去。參參！

> Manjushri Bodhisattva resides on Mount Qingliang, where he constantly teaches the Dharma together with ten thousand attendants. This is why monks from the Western Regions bow from afar toward this mountain, calling it the Land of Gold. The Avatamsaka Sutra says: "Manjushri in all places comes from the Land of Gold in all places." From this, does it mean that Manjushri truly dwells permanently on this mountain? In the realm of sentient beings, the accumulation of afflictions is what we call the land of scorching heat. If a practitioner can open the eye of wisdom, reach the state where conditioned thoughts dissolve and the mind merges with true nature, then coolness is present right here and now. In this way, everything seen is none other than Manjushri's transformative ground, and every step is inseparable from the pure and cool place of practice. This is what is meant by "Manjushri's Land of Gold in all places." The meditator Yetaí\* had long lived on Mount Tai and practiced there at night, hence his name. Now he has come to the south to travel and visit wise teachers. He must indeed have come with direct guidance from Manjushri. Just as Sudhana traveled south in search of the Way—though he passed through one hundred ten cities, he never moved a single step from where he stood. Likewise, even traveling throughout the ten directions, one never leaves the Land of Gold. The various teachings encountered with every teacher—whether favorable or challenging—are all the vision of Manjushri's wisdom. Now, when he comes to see this old man here at Wuru Peak, is this the same as the Land of Gold, or is it different? If you can discern this clearly, I will acknowledge that you have personally met Manjushri. If not, then buy another pair of straw sandals and continue your journey of practice. Investigate! Investigate! \*The robe night (Yetaí), a reference to the monk's name.
