> Laozi said: "The reason I have great suffering is that I have a body. If I had no body, what suffering would I have?" The \*Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment\* says: "This body of mine is formed from the four great elements. Observe within the body—the solid goes to earth, the moist goes to water, the warmth goes to fire, and the movement goes to wind. When the four elements separate, where is this illusory body then?" If you contemplate the mind in this way, gradually maturing over time, the form of the body suddenly becomes empty. All kinds of afflictions arise from deluded thoughts and inverted views—like dreams and illusions, they never truly existed. When affliction arises, directly observe: where does this deluded thought come from? Chase it to the place where it has never been born, and the deluded thought ceases. When deluded thoughts cease, thoughts suddenly become empty. When body and mind suddenly become empty, all afflictions dissolve in that very moment. With that thought, you enter the cool and blissful Pure Land! This contemplation is crucial—it is the wondrous medicine for escaping suffering. However, beginners may find it hard to accomplish at first. Simply take the phrase "Amitabha Buddha" as a living koan and keep it firmly in mind without forgetting. When deluded thoughts arise, raise the koan and press into them—the delusions naturally vanish. Because people normally lack right mindfulness, they drift along with deluded thoughts, clinging without cease, which only nourishes suffering! All phenomena arise from the mind itself; there is nothing outside the mind. If you do not observe the mind yet seek a way to escape suffering, it is like walking backward while trying to move forward. Just rouse courageous effort—never say "I can't," for that is only drawing a line for yourself!
