### 示吳啟高

> Instruction to Wu Qigao

啟高久歸三寶，齋心有年，今來匡山求授戒法為法門弟子，以結未來出世之緣，因詺名福常，別號淨心居士。為授優婆塞戒，復拈香請益，老人因示之曰：「一切世間種種業行皆是無常，盡為苦因，故感生娑婆國土，眾苦所聚，故名堪忍。愚迷者以苦為樂，轉滋貪愛更增苦本，不知出苦之要，是為顛倒。故舉世之人但有一念知是無常苦空，發心求出離者，即是大智慧人。但有一念返省，發起厭苦之心，便是出苦之路；但有一念求生淨土之願，即是成佛之本。所以佛設戒法教人止惡修善，以惡止則心淨，善修則苦滅，苦滅則福增。心淨則為淨土之因，苦滅則為極樂之本，福增則為常樂之果。是知一念發起受戒之心，則眾苦可斷、眾福可集、生死可出、淨土可生，則永超苦道常住極樂皆從最初一念發心為因地也。居士今日既能知此事、發此心，故凡所作即是出世之行矣！雖未出家即名佛子。從今果以持戒之心念佛，淨除心中夙染貪嗔癡愛種種煩惱，則心地清淨。以此淨心念佛，念念不忘、心心不斷，即日用現前事事皆是淨土之因；即所施種種四事供養三寶者，皆為莊嚴淨土之資，所謂：『心淨則佛土淨』。『唯心淨土，自性彌陀』元不離當人一念，是為真實法行。所謂真常之福從淨心中生，謂是故也。子果能諦信不疑，何用別求佛法？但不可作世間尋常事目之，則道念自堅，信心日長矣！珍重珍重！」

> Having long taken refuge in the Three Jewels and devoted your mind to the Dharma for years, you have now come to Mount Kuang to seek the precepts and become a disciple of the Dharma door, thereby forging a connection for future liberation. For this reason, I give you the name Fuchang, with the lay title "Jingxin Jushi" (Pure Mind Lay Practitioner). Having conferred upon you the Upāsaka precepts, you again offered incense and sought instruction. The Elder then addressed you, saying: "All the various karmic deeds in the world are impermanent and entirely causes of suffering. Thus, they lead to rebirth in the Sahā world, where suffering gathers in abundance—hence it is called 'endurance.' The deluded take suffering as pleasure, and with growing craving, they further deepen the root of suffering, unaware of the essential way to escape it. This is inversion. Therefore, in all the world, whoever has even a single thought recognizing impermanence, suffering, and emptiness, and resolves to seek liberation, is a person of great wisdom. Whoever has even a single thought of self-reflection, giving rise to a mind weary of suffering, is already on the path out of suffering. Whoever has even a single thought aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land, that is the very foundation of attaining Buddhahood. Thus, the Buddha established the precepts to teach people to cease evil and cultivate goodness. When evil ceases, the mind becomes pure; when goodness is cultivated, suffering is extinguished. When suffering is extinguished, merit increases. A pure mind is the cause of the Pure Land; the ending of suffering is the foundation of Ultimate Bliss; the growth of merit is the fruit of lasting joy. Know that a single thought giving rise to the mind to receive the precepts can cut off all suffering, gather all blessings, transcend birth and death, and attain rebirth in the Pure Land. Then one permanently surpasses the path of suffering and abides in Ultimate Bliss—all beginning from that first thought of aspiration as the causal ground. Lay practitioner, since today you can recognize this matter and generate this mind, all that you do is already the conduct of transcendence! Though you have not left home, you may call yourself a child of the Buddha. From now on, with the mind upholding the precepts, recite the Buddha's name. Purify the mind of its long-held defilements—greed, anger, delusion, and clinging—and the ground of mind will become clear. With this pure mind reciting the Buddha's name, thought after thought without forgetfulness, mind after mind without interruption, then in your daily life, every single matter becomes the cause of the Pure Land. Whatever offerings of clothing, food, bedding, and medicine you give to the Three Jewels all become resources for adorning the Pure Land. As it is said: 'When the mind is pure, the Buddha-land is pure.' 'The Pure Land is mind-only; Amitābha is self-nature.' This is never apart from one's present single thought—this is true Dharma practice. The so-called 'true everlasting blessings arise from the pure mind' is exactly this. If you can truly believe without doubt, why seek any other Dharma? Only do not regard this as an ordinary worldly affair, and your aspiration for the Path will naturally grow firm, your faith will increase day by day. Take care, take care!"
